Comedy Central's Drunk History has been canceled. The series, which aired on Comedy Central from 2013 until the end of its sixth season last August, consisted of different sketches depicting historical events as told by significantly inebriated guest stars. Episodes covered a wide swath of history, but typically centered around a theme, whether it be the history of a specific city or particular historical figures like the Roosevelts or Civil Rights heroes. Over the course of its six seasons, the series was nominated for seventeen Primetime Emmy Awards, winning one in 2015 for Outstanding Costumes for a Variety Program.

It was announced by Deadline that Drunk History will not be moving forward with season 7, which was ordered after its sixth season finished airing last summer. Preliminary preproduction work had begun when the COVID-19 Pandemic hit in March and forced production to halt. The series was also reportedly expensive to produce, featuring a revolving cast and extensive period costuming and set pieces. The cancellation also comes amid Comedy Central's increased emphasis on adult-focused animated series in the vein of South Park.

The sixth and unintended final season is currently up for three Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Variety Series, as well as nods for the series' costumes and production design. Drunk History has been nominated for Outstanding Variety Series every year since 2015. Given that this is the final awards season in which the series is eligible, ViacomCBS is reportedly campaigning harder than ever for the series. Whether the push will be effective remains to be seen, but Drunk History may have just become a sentimental favorite.
