How many Dragonheart movies are there and can fans expect any more films in the future? Directed by The Fast And The Furious helmer Rob Cohen, the very first Dragonheart was released back in 1996 by Universal Pictures. This fantasy film was a British-American production and starred Dennis Quaid as Bowen, a dragon-slaying knight who forms an unlikely alliance with a benevolent dragon named Draco (voiced by Sean Connery, with his unmistakable Scottish brogue) to take down the ruthless King Einon (David Thewlis) and put an end to his tyrannical rule.

Most critics weren’t too taken with Dragonheart but the movie was a box office hit and nabbed an Academy Award nomination for Best Visual Effects thanks to its then impressive CGI animation crafted by George Lucas’ company Industrial Light & Magic. The film gained something of a cult following after its release on home video and is still hailed as one of the best dragon movies of all time today. In 2000, the film was followed by a direct-to-video sequel titled Dragonheart: A New Beginning and has since spawned several prequels.

Currently, there are five movies in the Dragonheart franchise. After a lengthy hiatus, the franchise was revived in 2015 with the direct-to-video release of its first prequel Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer’s Curse which starred Julian Morris (Pretty Little Liars) and featured a dragon voiced by Oscar-winning British actor Ben Kingsley. That was followed by fellow prequel Dragonheart: Battle For The Heartfire in 2017 which featured the voice of Patrick Stewart as its dragon. The most recent installment was Dragonheart: Vengeance which was released in early 2020.

Dragonheart Vengeance

While the sequels and prequels aren’t as popular as the original Dragonheart movie, the franchise has kept chugging on regardless and – if Dragonheart: Vengeance star Arturo Muselli is to be believed – it seems it isn’t over yet. The Italian actor stated at the 2019 Giffoni Film Festival that a sixth Dragonheart movie was in pre-production and teased that another famous actor would be behind the voice of its dragon.

There’s been talk of the original Dragonheart movie getting a remake too. Back in 2013, Dragonheart creator Patrick Read Johnson – who was set to direct the original movie before he was fired and replaced by Rob Cohen – stated he’d love to remake the film with Sean Connery and Liam Neeson, who he’d originally envisioned would play Denis Quaid’s role. Either way, it looks like there’ll most likely be at least one more Dragonheart movie in the future.
