The Patternoggin introduces players to the world of Dragon Quest Treasures, a land ripe in valuables and monsters that can be recruited to the player's party to assist in their upcoming adventures throughout the islands of Draconia. Divided into three sections, The Patternoggin is the first of five islands players encounter, and hosts monsters that must be fought first in order to be scouted for recruitment. The monsters in Dragon Quest Treasures all desire a specific item that players must provide first before adding them to their party, except for some named creatures that openly join due to events in the main story.

Overall, there are seven different monsters that may wish to join the player in The Patternoggin, located either in The Upper Level's The Snouterhorn and Palatial Plains, or The Lower Level's Lickspittle Glade. Every monster in Dragon Quest Treasures has unique stats tied to it that apply during battle, as well as Treasure Capacity and Fortes that influence their utility outside of combat. Individual monsters are rated by their rarity, which can be seen through the color of their frames once players scout them for recruitment. The best monsters to add to the player's party have rainbow borders, and are the most difficult to find.

Slimes are iconic enemies in the Dragon Quest series, and feature in two forms in The Patternoggin, either regular or Cutie, with not many deviations except for a difference in aesthetic. Both provide the Launch Forte, which throws the player up to high spaces that would otherwise be hard to reach on the open areas of Draconia's islands in Dragon Quest Treasures. This Forte and the Sprint skill offered by the Sham Hatwich provide speedier ways for Erik and Mia to travel along the region, with the latter ability simply bolstering movement speed for faster travel time.

The Orc monster can carry more treasures, and uses its Scan Forte to highlight foraging points for the player, indicating the number of crafting materials they can collect within a certain space. Other distinct abilities exist with Dracky, whose Glide propels the player to and from larger heights without worry about fall damage, becoming a natural extension of the traits found in the Sprint and Launch traits. The final Forte that can be found is seen on the Muddy Hand and Shadow monsters, labeled as Stealth, which gives players a chance to dig straight into the ground to avoid obstacles and enemies during their adventure with their monster friends.

There are multiple versions of these seven monsters that carry different statistics through their rarity, encouraging players to scout them before embarking on a journey to find a desired item. As players continue to the four other islands found in Draconia, the friendly beasts discovered in The Patternoggin may become obsolete over time. However, every one of The Patternoggin's recruitable monsters provide a solid foundation for players to explore the mechanics that define Dragon Quest Treasures as they begin their hunt for the fortunes that are hidden within Draconia.
