The Namekian race introduced the concept of fusion to the Dragon Ball series. It wasn't until the Majin Buu Saga that fusion became possible for most of the cast of the series, as it could now be performed with the aid of a specific dance. The fans eagerly awaited the fusion between Goku and Vegeta, as such a being would certainly be the most powerful character in the whole series.
Goku and Vegeta would eventually fuse, but it would not be done with the Fusion Dance. Instead, they used the Potara Earrings that were worn by the Supreme Kai in order to perform a more permanent and powerful fusion. This led to the creation of Vegito, who used his immense power to punish Buu.

He Can Perform The Kaio-Ken While Super Saiyan
Goku's time on King Kai's planet allowed him to learn the Kaio-Ken technique. When the Kaio-Ken is used, it multiplies the strength of its user several times over, but it comes with a huge risk, as it makes them more susceptible to damage.
When Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan for the first time, he abandons the Kaio-Ken technique, as the Super Saiyan form is a lot safer. The only time he used both at the same time happened during one of the anime filler arcs, so its canonicity is questionable.
Dragon Ball Super later confirmed that mixing the Kaio-Ken with the Super Saiyan transformation would be fatal, though it was possible to mix it with the Super Saiyan Blue form.
In Super Dragon Ball Heroes, it is possible for Vegito to use the Kaio-Ken alongside the Super Saiyan transformation. This is likely because he is so durable and powerful that he can survive the harsh drawbacks that would destroy lesser beings.
The Excalibur Technique
It's clear that Akira Toriyama thinks swords are cool, as he felt the need to include them in Dragon Ball from time to time, even though the series was primarily about martial arts. Characters like Yamcha and Future Trunks would wield swords, to the point where Trunks was able to use his blade to kill Frieza.
Neither Goku nor Vegeta used a sword in battle. Vegito did, however, since he was able to create a blade out of pure energy and use it to impale his foes. This attack was known as the Spirit Sword and he used it to impale both Super Buu and Fused Zamasu.
In Dragon Ball Heroes, Vegito used an even more powerful variant of the Spirit Sword. When Vegito transforms into a Super Saiyan 3, he can create a massive version of the Spirit Sword, known as the Spirit Excalibur. This blade is so massive that its energy can be seen from orbit.
He Once Battled Gogeta
Vegito has only appeared twice in the Dragon Ball anime series. The video games have used him on many occasions, dating all the way back to Dragon Ball Z: Hyper Dimension on the Super Nintendo.
He became even more popular when the Dragon Ball Z video games started dealing with alternate realities and "What If..." stories, as it allowed his power to be put up against the other villains in the series.
In Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, the player is able to live out their nerdiest Dragon Ball Z fantasy since it is possible for Vegito to battle Gogeta in one of the alternate stories in the game. No explanation is given for how two fusions of Goku and Vegeta can exist at the same time in the same place. Gogeta and Vegito are just dropped into a field and told to fight each other for the entertainment of the player.
His Base Form Is Stronger Than Super Saiyan 3
It might seem as if the Fusion Dance and the Potara Fusion work in pretty much the same way. The Dragon Ball manga originally stated that Potara Fusion was permanent and the Fusion Dance only lasted for a brief time, but that has since been retconned. The actual difference is that the Fusion Dance adds the power levels of both of the beings together, while the Potara Fusion multiplies them several times over.
The difference between the various forms of fusion was explained in the official Daizenshuu 7 guide. This was a book that clarified a lot of information about Dragon Ball Z, though a lot of its revelations have since been retconned.
According to Daizenshuu 7, the Potara Fusion is so powerful that the base form of Vegito is equal to that of Goku in his Super Saiyan 3 form. This still means that Vegito is more powerful, as the Super Saiyan 3 transformation only lasts for a brief time and takes its toll on the user's body.
The Potara Retcon
When Goku and Vegeta first put on the Potara Earrings. they were under the impression that the fusion they were about to perform was permanent. Vegeta only agreed to the fusion due to the sheer strength of Super Buu, as he knew they wouldn't be able to stand against him individually. The fusion was later undone when Vegito was absorbed by Buu.
Dragon Ball Super has retconned how the Potara Earrings work. The fusion is now only permanent if one of the people involved is a God. If two mortals fuse, then it will last for an hour. This timeframe will be reduced significantly if the fused being used incredibly powerful techniques.
This new information concerning the Potara Fusion does actually solve an inconsistency with the original series. Vegito was defused when he was absorbed by Buu, which Goku blamed on Buu's unique physiology, yet Gotenks remained fused when they found him inside of Buu's body.
He Is Canonically The Most Powerful Character In Dragon Ball Z
The question of what exactly is "canon" in Dragon Ball is hard to answer. If you only consider the manga to be canon, then the story ends with the arrival of Uub and a lot of material has to be ignored. The anime presents its own problems, as it featured a lot of filler that is generally considered to be sub-par.
You also have the problem of Garlic Jr, whose presence suggests that the movies are canon. This is before you even discuss Dragon Ball GT and Super. A lot of fans consider Dragon Ball Super to be canon, but Toriyama collaborates with other people on that show.
In terms of the material that Akira Toriyama solely created himself, then Vegito is the most powerful being in the Dragon Ball universe. No other creature came close to Vegito, as he was able to dominate Super Buu in his base form. If he had transformed into a Super Saiyan 3, then the gods themselves should have been afraid.
The Naming Problem
When two characters fuse in Dragon Ball Z, the new being usually uses a name that is a combination of those of its creators. The fusion of Goten and Trunks became Gotenks and the Fusion Dance version of Goku and Vegeta became Gogeta.
Vegito's name caused problems in this regard. It took a while for Vegito to appear in the English version of the Dragon Ball Z anime, so the fans came up with numerous different romanizations of the name, such as Vegatto. The official English language versions of the Dragon Ball manga originally called him Vegetto, as the name was supposed to be a mixture of Vegeta and Kakarot, rather than Goku.
The Viz Media translation of Vegito's name was also different, as they used the name Kakarotto instead, as it was closer to the original Japanese version of the word. This meant that the version of Vegito that appeared in the Viz version of Dragon Ball was called Vegerot instead.
They Changed Candy Vegito's Voice
It didn't take long for Super Buu to realize that he was totally outclassed by Vegito. All of his power couldn't put a dent in Vegito's base form, which meant that his inevitable transformation into a Super Saiyan was likely to spell Super Buu's doom.
Super Buu had a trump card up his sleeve, as he still retained his magical ability to transform other beings into food. He was successful at hitting Vegito with his Chocolate Beam, which transformed the fused Saiyan into a small ball of candy. Vegito took this transformation in his stride, as he still retained his incredible strength and was now a lot harder to hit.
When FUNimation first dubbed Dragon Ball Z into English, they gave the candy version of Vegito an annoyingly high-pitched voice. This was changed in the remastered version of the show so that Vegito retained his original voice after he was transformed into candy.
Toriyama Didn't Want To Bring Him Back For Dragon Ball Super
Dragon Ball Super has often been accused of being fan fiction given form. Scenes like Trunks combining the Spirit Bomb with his sword, or Android 17 and Piccolo having a broment after seeing each other for the first time in years feel like they were written by a teenager.
The return of Vegito is one such example of pure Dragon Ball Z fan fiction at its finest. The story sets up events perfectly so that Goku and Vegeta have no choice but to bring the old fan favorite out of retirement for one last fight.
Akira Toriyama actually didn't want to bring Vegito back at all. He was fine with Goku and Vegeta beating Fused Zamasu on their own, yet he included Vegito because he thought that's what the fans wanted to see.
Toriyama didn't think it would be possible for the Potara Fusion to work with Goku and Vegeta again, due to how much they had grown since the Majin Buu Saga, yet he still felt pressured into bringing Vegito back.
The One Piece X Vegito Crossover
Dragon Ball was once the best-selling manga series in the world. It has since been dethroned by One Piece, which has managed to sell almost double the amount of books that Dragon Ball did, and it's still going.
Dragon Ball and One Piece are both printed in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Akira Toriyama also happens to be good friends with Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece. This means that there have been several official crossovers between the two series.
In 2008, one of the characters from One Piece was featured in a toyline that gave him outfits from different Weekly Shonen Jump series. Tony Tony Chopper was chosen out of all of the One Piece cast members to wear the clothes of the other Weekly Shonen Jump protagonists.
It's possible to buy a plush figure of Tony Tony Chopper wearing a Vegito inspired outfit. This also extended to a series of keychains.
The Shonen Jump Problem
Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has access to some of the most popular anime and manga characters of all time. Jump Ultimate Stars is a highly regarded crossover fighting game that was released on the Nintendo DS. The player was given a page to fill up with characters, which were represented by comic panels. This allowed the player to bring multiple characters of various strength into a match, in order to keep things balanced.
The odd thing about these games is that the strength of the characters doesn't match up. The most powerful version of Goku in this game is actually Vegito, yet he is put on the same power tier as characters like Naruto (in his Four-Tails mode) and Ichigo from Bleach (while using his Bankai).
These are powerful characters, yet they shouldn't be able to last two seconds against the strongest being in the Dragon Ball Z universe.
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 Had A Lot Of Cut Content Relating To Vegito
There was once a popular MMO in Asia called Dragon Ball Online. Akira Toriyama had a large hand in its creation and it was considered to be the true continuation of Dragon Ball Z.
The servers for Dragon Ball Online have long since been shut down, but most of the material from the game has been recycled into Dragon Ball Xenoverse, which uses a lot of the same structure and story. This gave the international Dragon Ball fans a chance to enjoy the material from Dragon Ball Online, as the game never received an English localization.
It seems that a lot more was planned for Vegito in Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, as there is unused audio in the game that suggests that he was going to have more forms and attacks. According to the cut audio, Vegito was going to be able to transform into a Super Saiyan 2 and could use the Destructo Disc and Spirit Bomb attacks.
His Ultimate Technique Debuted In The Video Games Twenty Years Before It Appeared In The Anime
When Vegito first showed up, the fans eagerly anticipated him using a combination of Goku's Kamehameha attack and Vegeta's Final Flash. They were left disappointed, however, as Vegito only ever used his own unique attacks and those of Goku and Vegeta when he battled Super Buu. He never mixed their signature moves during the fight.
The fans finally got what they wanted in Dragon Ball Super, as Vegito finally used a mixture of the Super Kamehameha with the Final Flash in his battle against Fused Zamasu. What most fans didn't realize is that the move had been introduced in the Dragon Ball Z video games almost two decades earlier.
The Final Kamehameha first appeared as one of Gogeta's moves in Dragon Ball GT: Final Bout, which was released on the PlayStation in 1997. The later games would give the move to Vegito and he has been using it consistently since the PlayStation 2 era of Dragon Ball Z games.
Super Saiyan 3 Vegito
Dragon Ball Super has been accused of being like fan fiction, but it pales in comparison to the Dragon Ball Heroes games. These are Japan-exclusive arcade games that require the use of cards in order to play. The Dragon Ball Heroes games also feature high-quality anime cutscenes, which tell an ongoing story.
The reason Dragon Ball Heroes is even worse than Super in terms of being like fan fiction is that there are cards for every possible form or fusion that you could imagine. If you ever wanted to play as an adult version of Gotenks, a Super Saiyan 4 version of Gohan, or a Super Saiyan 3 version of Nappa with a huge yellow mustache, then this game has you covered.
Vegito can use several transformations in Dragon Ball Heroes and Super Dragon Ball Heroes that he never used in the anime. He can turn into a Super Saiyan 2, Super Saiyan 3, and the Saiyan beyond God form.
He Was Only Created Because Of Fusion Reborn
Akira Toriyama had little involvement with the Dragon Ball Z movies. This is because he was still working hard on the Dragon Ball manga at the time, which required him to produce around twenty pages of new material a week.
He had little free time to dedicate to the other Dragon Ball projects, so the anime staff was left to come up with their own storylines. Toriyama has had a lot more involvement in the recent Dragon Ball movies and Dragon Ball Super.
The Dragon Ball Z movies were actually responsible for the creation of Vegito, specifically Fusion Reborn. Akira Toriyama had planned on having Goku and Vegeta fuse using the Fusion Dance, but the anime staff had already laid claim to the idea, with Gogeta being planned as the draw for Fusion Reborn.
Akira Toriyama didn't want to step on the anime staff's toes, so he made up the concept of Potara Fusion in order to create an alternate fusion of Goku and Vegeta. He had never intended for the Supreme Kai's earrings to be anything other than a piece of jewelry
