The manga continuation for Dragon Ball Super just added a huge upgrade to Ultra Instinct, which will make it an even greater weapon for Goku in the battles to come. Since learning the form, Goku has been focused on improving his use of it in combat, having employed it in his fights against Moro and the manga’s newest villain, Granolah. Through most of Dragon Ball Super, Goku’s strongest form was Super Saiyan Blue, which he unlocked for the first time in the Golden Frieza Saga.

Thanks to his training with Whis, Goku discovered during the Tournament of Power he was capable of achieving a state previously thought to be reserved for the Gods, known as Ultra Instinct. Even before he could enter the completed form, Goku discovered it gave him what it takes to go toe-to-toe with Jiren. Later, Goku achieved the finished state, and in doing so became the strongest competitor in the entire tournament. Even Kefla, the fusion of the two female Universe 6 Super Saiyans, and Jiren himself couldn’t beat Ultra Instinct Goku.

It may seem like Ultra Instinct doesn’t need any additional boosts, but Goku just found a way to make it better anyway. Against Granolah in chapter 72 of the Dragon Ball Super manga continuation, Goku was struggling to hold his own in his Super Saiyan God form. So while maintaining that transformation, Goku tapped into Ultra Instinct. From there, Goku jumped into Super Saiyan Blue and managed to gain an advantage. Vegeta, who was watching the fight, noted Goku is much more powerful when using a Super Saiyan form and Ultra Instinct at the same time, as opposed to using just one.

Using them together seems to make a big difference, not unlike Goku’s Super Saiyan Blue and Kaio-ken combo. Super Saiyan Blue Goku was losing to Hit in the Universe 6 Saga until he unleashed the Kaio-ken technique, which multiplied his power level and made it possible for him to even the odds. Doing the same thing with Ultra Instinct and Super Saiyan Blue could prove to be just as useful, if not more so. Just as it was with Kaio-ken, this combination of techniques can only be utilized for a short time. Tapping into Ultra Instinct while in a Super Saiyan transformation certainly boosts his evasive capabilities, but he can’t keep it up forever, which makes it necessary for Goku to win quickly.

Unfortunately, this didn’t go well with Granolah, who defeated Goku despite the upgrade. However, it could be that given time, he can work on this and use it better. If it differs visually in any way from the normal Super Saiyan Blue form is hard to tell in a black-and-white comic, but that question could be answered if Goku repeats this move in the second Dragon Ball Super movie.
