The Tournament of Power seemingly left little for Goku and his allies to accomplish in the world of Dragon Ball, but there still different roads the anime could take to continue the story. Dragon Ball Super: Broly already proved that are still other powerful foes out there for Goku and Vegeta to face. In the recent movie, Goku and Vegeta fused and became Super Saiyan Blue Gogeta in an effort to defeat the Legendary Super Saiyan, Broly.

After 131 episodes, Dragon Ball Super came to an end, despite being a big success for Toei Animation. The final storyline in Dragon Ball Super was the Universal Survival Saga, a large-scale event that pitted teams of the ten strongest fighters across eight universes in the Tournament of Power, a contest that was expected to determine the fate of the multiverse. Each eliminated universe was subsequently erased from existence. After Android 17 of Universe 7 emerged as the victor, he used the Super Dragon Balls to wish back the erased universes.

At the time of the show's ending, fans wondered where Dragon Ball could go next. Dragon Ball Super is over, but a new anime series (or movie) could be on the horizon. The question is, who would Goku fight? If Goku has already battled nearly every threat in Universe 7, and gone up against the strongest fighters in the other universes, what could the next Dragon Ball anime or movie possibly throw at Goku next? Here are three different directions the franchise could take as it moves forward.

Dragon Ball Can Adapt The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga

Planet-Eater Moro in the Dragon Ball Super Manga

The TV version of Dragon Ball Super may have ended, but it's still continuing as a manga. The next chapter in the manga is a story called the Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga. The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga brings Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo into conflict with a new enemy called Moro, a wizard who battled the Kais of Universe 7 ten millions years ago and was sealed away. After escaping from the Galactic Prison, Moro renewed his reign of terror, forcing Goku and Vegeta to oppose him alongside the Galactic Patrol. Moro's dark magic makes him a formidable opponent for the heroes, and his efforts to free all the prisoners from the Galactic Prison made him even more dangerous. The Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga is still ongoing, so it's not clear how Moro's crusade against Universe 7 will ultimately end.

Moro has been shown to be one of Dragon Ball's most ruthless and evil villains, making him a popular choice to be brought to life in the anime. His backstory has also allowed for an interesting look at the rich history of Universe 7 and some of its oldest characters. The story - which notably brought Yamcha back into the fold and introduced a new hero in the form of Merus - has been regarded as a solid installment in the Dragon Ball universe, and may be the most obvious path for Dragon Ball to take as it looks to the future.

Dragon Ball Can Adapt Another Non-Canon Movie

Dragon Ball Super: Broly became the fourth movie to feature fan-favorite villain Broly as the main antagonist -- but only the first Broly movie to be in-canon, which means that the previous version of Broly, and all the other villains from the Dragon Ball Z movies aren't part of Dragon Ball's continuity. Dragon Ball Super reimagined Broly with a new origin story and turned him into one of the anime's most compelling -- and sympathetic -- characters. It's possible that a future installment in the Dragon Ball franchise could follow a similar approach by adapting another of the non-canon movies. Other popular villains featured in non-canon Dragon Ball Z movies include Janemba, Cooler, Turles, and Bojack, and though none are powerful enough to challenge Goku at his current level, like Broly, they could be updated for their introduction into Dragon Ball canon.

Perhaps the best candidate for this particular pathway is Frieza's brother, Cooler, the only villain outside of Broly to appear in more than one movie. Cooler battled Goku in Cooler's Revenge and The Return of Cooler. Originally, Cooler was depicted as a character whose strength was even more impressive than Frieza. In his prior appearances, he wanted to avenge Frieza's death, but since Frieza is no longer dead, a reimagined Cooler would be in need of a new reason to go against Goku. Cooler would presumably benefit from Frieza's ability to drastically increase his power through a short period of training, making it relatively easy for him to be a viable opponent for Goku.

Dragon Ball Could Explore The Other Four Universes

Gods of Destruction Dragon Ball Super

In the lead-up to the Tournament of Power, it's established that 12 universes exist in the multiverse, and that four were excluded from the fighting. The exclusions were made on the basis of each universe's "mortal levels", a number that averages the power levels of their inhabitants. Universe 7 was one of the lowest, so they were forced to compete, but the four universes with the highest mortal levels were left out completely.

The Tournament of Power provided representation for seven other universes, and allowed fans to meet the most powerful warriors from multiple universes, including Universe 11's Jiren, Universe 2's Ribrianne, Universe 9's Bergamo, and more. Due to the rules established by the Grand Priest, the Universal Survival Saga doesn't give any representation to Universes 1, 5, 8, and 12, leaving nearly everything about them a mystery. Fans got to meet their respective Gods of Destruction, such as Universe 1's Iwan, Universe 5's Arak, Universe 8's Liquiir, and Universe 12's Giin, the only God among the four who curiously never demonstrated his power, but that's as far the Universal Survival went when it came to these four universes.

Having them not participate may have served a very important purpose. Their exclusion leaves room for multiple stories in the Dragon Ball universe, since any and all of them could be explored in the future. So though Goku and company may have already defeated the best that the seven other competing universes had to offer, an adventure involving one of the exempt universes could introduce new and even more powerful characters for Goku to fight.
