Turles could emerge as the villain of the second Dragon Ball Super movie. The evil Saiyan warlord and the main antagonist of Dragon Ball Z: Tree of Might could be chosen as Goku and the Z-Warriors’ next foe.

Toei Animation and Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama have confirmed that a new film is in development, but there’s been no word as of yet on what the story will entail or who the main characters will be fighting. Some have speculated that the next installment in the franchise will follow the manga and adapt the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc by using Moro, but given the length of the story, it may not take that route. Instead, it may take inspiration from the previous film and retell a classic story.

Since the events depicted in the 13 Dragon Ball Z movies made from 1989 to 1995 aren’t part of the show’s canon, Dragon Ball Super: Broly was able to bring in the Legendary Super Saiyan with a new origin and motive. It’s warm reception from the fanbase and success at the box office may lead to Toei Animation making a similar decision for the sequel by reintroducing another non-canon villain.

Dragon Ball Z: Tree of Might’s Turles Explained

Turles Crusher Corps

In the beginning of Dragon Ball Z, Goku and his friends had to deal with the arrival of three warriors from the Saiyan homeworld: Raditz, Nappa, and Vegeta. Tree of Might, the second movie under the “Dragon Ball Z” branding, sent a fourth evil Saiyan to Earth. Sometime after defeating Vegeta, the Z-Warriors encountered Turles and his band of alien minions. The character, who mysteriously looked identical to Goku, led his team to the planet on a mission to plant the Tree of Might, which was capable of producing fruit that can greatly enhance a person’s physical capabilities. Apparently, finding an environment suitable for growing it was the purpose of his visit.

Turles and his men proved to be more than a challenge for Goku, Piccolo, Gohan, Krillin, Tien, Chiaotzu, and Yamcha. The seven Z-Warriors gave it everything they had to beat Turles, who easily outmatched them all once he ate from the tree. It took Goku’s Spirit Bomb (powered up by the Tree of Might itself), for Turles to finally be brought down. Following his death, Turles made various appearances in Dragon Ball video games, such as Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 and Dragon Ball Heroes, which found interesting ways to expand on his origin and continue his story. However, the video games have been the extend that Turles has been used beyond Tree of Might.

DBZ's Turles Doesn't Fit In Dragon Ball Super

Turles could theoretically appear in the new Dragon Ball Super movie, but it would have to be a totally different version to the one that menaced the Z-Warriors in Tree of Might. The movie took place right after the Saiyan Saga, back when extraterrestrial villains in the vein of Turles and his squad were still regarded as threats. But the franchise has since moved past characters like him, as even Yamcha and Krillin are now stronger than Turles. Now, the heroes are facing off against gods and beings from other universes who are several levels above what Turles was in Tree of Might.

It would be difficult to explain the sudden emergence of yet another Saiyan who survived the destruction of Planet Vegeta and why that character can be on par with Goku and Vegeta. The anime pulled this off with Broly by revealing that he’s been living in isolation on a distant world, but the same explanation wouldn’t work as well for an adventurous space pirate like Turles who should have been encountered by now. And if he was around, he shouldn’t be strong enough to put up a good against any of the major Z-Warriors.

Dragon Ball Super's Turles Can Be From Universe 6

Dragon Ball Cabba Caulifla Kale

Dragon Ball Super can fix its Turles problem by reworking him into a Universe 6 character. it was previously established that Dragon Ball’s multiverse consists of 12 universes, with each one being a mirror of another. Universe 7’s “twin” is Universe 6, which shares many of the same planets and races. That’s why it has some characters who exist as the Universe 6 equivalents to important figures from Universe 7. For example, Cabba, Kale, and Frost are regarded as its counterparts to Vegeta, Broly, and Frieza respectively. Kale, for example, is Universe 6’s very own Legendary Super Saiyan and Frost is the treacherous ruler of a galactic empire (just like Frieza). All three have mannerisms, moves, personality traits, or physical characteristics that link them to their “twins” from Universe 7.

With that in mind, Turles could work in Dragon Ball Super’s world if he were to be revealed as Goku’s Universe 6 counterpart. That would help make sense of why he looks like Goku (a detail that Tree of Might inexplicably never touched on), and how he might have the strength needed to rival him. If he too possesses the same ambitious drive and potential that Goku has, he could achieve some extremely impressive gains during his pursuit of power. There’s no telling what kind of destruction an evil version of Goku would be capable of, or what he might attempt to do to get stronger.

What Turles' Universe 6 Story Could Be

Turles Tree Of Might Fruit

How could Universe 6’s Turles become a problem for the heroes of Universe 7? It’s possible that Turles could use a new take on the Tree of Might to obtain unparalleled power. In the original Dragon Ball Z movie, its fruit didn’t even make him as strong as Super Saiyan, but its effects could be dramatically increased for the movie. After all, it was said in Tree of Might that its fruit was only meant for the gods. If only characters like Beerus and Champa are supposed to eat it, then it seems reasonable it could make Turles a force to be reckoned with, someone who could fight with the very best that the Z-Warriors have to offer. If Turles acquires most of his power from the Tree of Might’s fruit in the movie, that could also provide the film with a good reason for why he wasn’t invited to join Champa’s Universe 6 team for the Tournament of Power. He may not have been strong enough at the time.

After getting the power he needs from the Tree of Might, Turles could prove himself by taking on – and possibly defeating – Champa. If the Tree of Might’s fruit can make someone as powerful as a god, Turles could develop the strength it would take to pull off such a feat. With that much power, he could even access the Super Saiyan Blue form that Goku and Vegeta have in Dragon Ball Super. It may reach a point where the Z-Warriors of Universe 7 will be asked to help fight him. Plus, there’s a good chance that Caulifla, Cabba, and Kale will get to have some level of involvement as well. As residents of Universe 6, a Turles story set in their world would be the perfect opportunity to bring them back. If so, an alliance between the heroes of both universes might be in order, especially if he decides to give the fruit to his minions.
