Jiren’s backstory in Dragon Ball Super may have set up a future villain for the Z-Warriors to fight. Toward the end of the anime’s Tournament of Power arc, Dragon Ball Super revealed the origin story for Jiren, the champion of the Universe 11 team and the saga’s main antagonist. The anime’s exploration of his past provided an explanation for his motivations and why he wanted to win the Super Dragon Balls.

Jiren’s fights with Goku and Vegeta proved that he was the most powerful opponent they had faced until that point. Even their combined strength couldn’t bring down Jiren, who was clearly the strongest of all 80 fighters competing in the Tournament of Power. But as powerful as Jiren was, it’s likely that in the future, Goku and the Z-Warriors will find themselves challenged by even stronger foes. Not long after fighting Jiren, they had to go up against Broly, who was quite close to Jiren’s power level. In fact, it’s possible that one of the villains the franchise will throw at them next will be tied to Jiren and Universe 11.

It was revealed in Dragon Ball Super that during his youth, Jiren lost both his parents and his master to a villain. This resulted in Jiren intensifying his training so that he could eventually avenge the people he lost. His enemy's name was never mentioned, nor was he clearly shown. The anime didn’t reveal much about him, which may have been intentional. Different translations have described him differently, but the manga version of the story stated that Jiren’s loved ones couldn’t be resurrected by the Dragon Balls because their killer was a demon. Since Dragon Ball Super never said if Jiren eventually defeated this villain, it could be that the anime was setting him up to appear in a later saga or movie.

Dragon Ball Super Backstory Jiren Demon

While it may very well be that the demon’s only real purpose was to flesh out Jiren’s character in Dragon Ball Super, the anime’s careful avoidance of revealing too much about him could be a sign of something more. The demon connection strengthens the possibility of this character appearing again, especially since the Demon Realm is a corner of the Dragon Ball universe that’s been set up by Dabura, but hasn’t really been visited yet in canon. The number of stories it’s created for the video games has led to speculation about when the anime will go there. Jiren’s opponent would create an opening for the franchise to finally dive deep into the Demon Realm.

As residents of Universe 11, characters like Jiren, Top, and Dypso exist separately from the Z-Warriors, but their worlds colliding again isn’t an unfeasible scenario. The crossovers between its universes in Dragon Ball Super could certainly continue in the next anime. Now that the Z-Warriors have encountered these characters and their Gods of Destruction, the door is open for future team-ups to occur. If Jiren and his allies ever need help in taking down Universe 11’s mysterious demon, it would make sense to turn to Goku and Vegeta.
