Piccolo is set to gain a new power in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and this will make his bond with Gohan even better than it already is. Ever since the Saiyan Saga, the father-and-son type relationship between Piccolo and Gohan has been a key part of the Dragon Ball franchise. And promotional material for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero suggests that this endearing element of the series will be highlighted in a big way.
The latest trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero reveals that Piccolo is going to obtain a brand new “Potential Unleashed” form at some point in the movie. Piccolo has been shown training on and off over the years, but this marks the first time he’s getting a full-fledged power-up since fusing with Kami in the Android Saga. Not only that, but the transformation also has the effect of making his coloration closer to how it was originally depicted in the manga, similar to how Future Trunks’ hair was changed to blue in Dragon Ball Super and how Frieza’s first form was given its original colors in Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
Piccolo’s new powers also serve to add even more to his longstanding bond with Gohan. The reason for that is because the Potential Unleashed form is the same form Gohan unlocked from his training with Elder Kai in Dragon Ball Z's Buu Saga; Gohan’s form is often referred to as “Ultimate Gohan” or “Mystic Gohan," but Potential Unleashed is technically the official name. If Piccolo is going to obtain the same transformation as Gohan, then that means the two of them will have another thing in common. And that, in turn, will add even more to their already strong bond with each other.
Ever since Piccolo took it upon himself to train Gohan to fight the Saiyans, the two of them have had a close father-son-type relationship. Piccolo constantly protects Gohan and looks out for him, most notably sacrificing himself to protect Gohan from Nappa, and Gohan’s respect for Piccolo has led to him constantly emulating him, whether through wearing the same outfit as him or using the same techniques as him. The two of them share a bond that’s one of the strongest in the entire series, and if Gohan and Piccolo share a technique unique to them, their bond can become even stronger.
Gohan and Piccolo have already been stated to be the main characters of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, and Piccolo’s new transformation does a lot to emphasize that. Not only does it reinforce the idea of the Ultimate form being a powerful technique, but Piccolo sharing it with Gohan gives the two of them a reason to be in the spotlight together. All in all, it looks like a classic element of the series is set to be reinforced in a big way.
