A mysterious new character is joining the Dragon Ball universe in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. His design was one of a handful of reveals made about the upcoming movie at San-Diego Comic-Con 2021. It was confirmed by Toei Animation that the sequel to Dragon Ball Super: Broly will hit theaters sometime in 2022. The release date and the title weren’t the only things discussed by Toei Animation during SDCC 2021, however.

On top of a teaser trailer previewing a new CG animation style, Toei showed off concept art for some of the characters who will play a role in Goku’s next Dragon Ball adventure. Piccolo, Krillin and Pan will all receive updated looks for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Another design unveiled at the event is for an entirely new character whose name is being kept under wraps. Whoever he is, he was designed by creator Akira Toriyama himself, which is a detail indicative of his importance.

Nothing has been said about the character’s role in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, so it’s hard to say if he’ll be aligning with the Z-Warriors or fighting against them. Considering that he bears little resemblance to any other Dragon Ball character, it would seem he hails from a new alien race. His use of a futuristic gun suggests a connection between him and the Galactic Patrol, the extraterrestrial peace-keeping organization that Jaco belongs to, since Jaco and other Galactic Patrol members carry similar weapons. It could be that the Galactic Patrol has sent him to capture a criminal from a distant galaxy.

Regardless, guns of any kind don’t have a strong presence in the Dragon Ball franchise since they don’t really bring that much to the table when compared with the main characters’ raw, physical strength or the high-powered energy blasts they can generate from their own bodies. So with that in mind, it may be that like Jaco, this new character will be a key player in the story, but not a fighter capable of engaging with them in combat. Though not exactly likely, it is at least possible that in an alternative scenario, this character’s gun can hurt Dragon Ball's Z-Warriors.

Another possibly pertaining to this character is that there are actually two of them. One image shows the number “1” on his chest, with him garbed in a red cape, whereas a blue-caped version sports a “2”. Also, it’s worth noting the image of the blue variant has an additional fin on his head. This could mean that two almost-identical alien warriors are about to meet the Z-Warriors in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. There’s a chance that they’ll herald the arrival of the movie’s mystery villain, whether it be Cooler, Moro, or someone else. Or, this character could form an alliance with the heroes.
