Who was on Goku's team in Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power and how did they lose? The Tournament of Power, the final storyline in the anime, lasted for over 30 episodes, and forced Goku and his allies to battle the strongest warriors from seven other universes. Each team had ten combatants, which meant that over the course of the tournament, Goku and the Z-Warriors were pitted against 70 fighters, the highest number of warriors that's ever been featured in a single Dragon Ball story.

There are 12 universes in Dragon Ball Super's multiverse, but only eight were required to compete, with Universe 7 — the home of Goku and his friends — being one of them. The prize of winning the tournament was the Super Dragon Balls, and the consequence was complete annihilation of the competing team's entire universe. With everything at stake, Goku had to put together a team of his most loyal and most powerful allies.

The Tournament of Power introduced fans to a slew of new characters, but also featured a few returning Universe 6 characters, such as Hit, Cabba, Frost, and Botamo. As for the Universe 7 team, it was packed with characters with long and deep histories with the Dragon Ball franchise, and not all were heroes. Also, some were characters who had become irrelevant. However, the need for ten warriors allowed heroes who had been put on the backburner a chance to shine. Here's every warrior on Goku's Tournament of Power team, and how they were defeated.

Krillin

At the beginning of the tournament, team leader Gohan devised a plan for the Universe 7 team to stay together, so that their numbers could overwhelm anyone who came close. This lasted for a little while, but this changed when the group was separated. Soon after, Shosa and Majora from Universe 4 attacked Krillin and Android 18. Krillin faced great difficulties battling the blind Majora, but soon discovered that his opponent's sense of smell was his greatest weakness. Using his dirty shoe to distract Majora, Krillin knocked him out of the tournament. His joy at his victory was interrupted when Frieza's Universe 6 counterpart, Frost, used a sneak attack to eliminate an unsuspecting Krillin.

Tien

Tien Dragon Ball Super

Tien's biggest contribution to the tournament was his efforts to take down Universe 2's Harmira, who acted as a sniper to pin down Gohan and Piccolo. Harima's precision with his energy attacks put Tien in a situation where he had to use his multi-form technique to make clones of himself. His clones went down one by one until all that was left was Tien himself. After Tien succeeded in closing the distance between them, Harmira destroyed the ground beneath Tien, but fortunately Tien managed to take Harmira down with him. Tien became the second Universe 7 fighter to be defeated, but it was still by far Tien's greatest moment in Dragon Ball Super.

Master Roshi

Master Roshi was always one of Dragon Ball Z's weakest characters, but Dragon Ball Super gave Roshi a massive upgrade and made him even stronger than Tien. Roshi fared significantly better than both Tien and Krillin by managing to eliminate several opponents, including Caway and Dercori. Roshi even won an intense battle with Universe 4's team leader, Ganos, whose power pushed Roshi to the edge. After barely surviving a fight with Frost, Roshi was convinced by Vegeta to eliminate himself. Roshi accomplished much in the Tournament of Power, but he had pushed himself to the point of exhaustion and could no longer fight.

Piccolo

Piccolo Special Beam Cannon Dragon Ball Super

Piccolo was a valuable asset to Goku's team in the Tournament of Power. Piccolo, who fought beside Gohan through most of the conflict, engaged in battles with fighters from Universe 10, Universe 6, and Universe 4, and managed to eliminate an impressive number of enemies. Together, he and Gohan defeated the last two Universe 6 fighters, which were the Namekians Saonel and Pirina. Piccolo also defeated the invisible Universe 4 warrior, Gamisaras, who had become a nuisance for many of the teams involved. Piccolo finally went down to the tiny – but formidable — insect Damom. Despite being only the fourth Universe 7 fighter to fall, Piccolo made it through most of the tournament.

Android 18

Android 18 spent most her time fighting alongside Android 17 against the warriors of Universe 2. Android 18, whose power paled in comparison to Android 17's, delivered a massive blow to Universe 2 by taking out Ribrianne. Android 18 stood alongside the remaining Universe 7 fighters when they faced off with Anilaza, the fusion of Universe 3's robotic fighters. When 17 fell out of the ring, 18 sacrificed herself to keep her brother in the fight, knowing that his chances of winning the tournament were better than hers.

Gohan

After regaining his Ultimate form, Gohan did more than pull his own weight in the Tournament of Power. After fighting the two Universe 6 Namekians with Piccolo, leading his team's effort to defeat Anilaza, and engaging in a two-on-one match with Android 17 against Top, Gohan had his last stand against Dyspo, the third strongest warrior from Universe 11. Golden Frieza was unable to keep up with Dypso's massive speed upgrade, forcing Gohan to get involved to protect his teammate. After finding a way to combat Dyspo's speed, Gohan had Frieza use a blast to take them both out of the ring. Gohan's sacrifice was a big help to the Universe 7 team, as they surely would have lost if Dyspo had eliminated both of them.

Vegeta

Vegeta shattered his own limits throughout the tournament and reached a new version of the Super Saiyan Blue transformation. Vegeta used his new power boost to take out Top, who had just become a God of Destruction. Vegeta's actions left Universe 7 with only one remaining opponent: Universe 11's Jiren. Vegeta gave it everything he had, but after his power was drained, Vegeta was reduced to his base form. Despite his resolve to win the tournament and wish back Universe 6, there was nothing he could do to stop Jiren. Luckily, Vegeta was able to give what remained of his energy to Goku before Jiren punched him out of the ring.

Goku & Frieza

Goku Frieza Dragon Ball

Goku and Frieza, who will always be the greatest of enemies, had to put aside their differences to save Universe 7 and win the Tournament of Power. After several grueling battles, Goku and Frieza made it to the very end of the tournament with only four fighters left standing, the other two being Jiren and Android 17. For a few episodes, Frieza was missing from the action, having been pummeled into unconsciousness by Jiren. With the others down, Goku had to face Jiren alone. Goku achieved the mastered form of Ultra Instinct and finally overpowered Jiren. When his energy gave out, he was unable to finish off Jiren. Back in his base form, Goku was assisted by Frieza and Android 17. Goku joined forces with Frieza and together, the two forced Jiren off the edge. As a result, all three warriors were eliminated.

Android 17 (Winner)

Android 17 in Dragon Ball

The breakout star of Dragon Ball Super's Tournament of Power was Android 17, who returned to the series after a long absence to serve as a hero for the first time. Android 17, who is powerful enough to fight Super Saiyan Blue Goku, performed surprisingly well in the tournament as he fought off attackers from Universe 2, and more. Alongside Gohan, Android 17 was even able to hold his own against Top for a while. Android 17 seemingly self-destructed to save Goku and Vegeta from elimination. But in the final minute of the tournament, he was revealed to be alive. When Frieza, Goku, and 17 made their final stand against a nearly depleted Jiren, it was agreed that 17 would provide backup. So when Goku and Frieza eliminated themselves to stop Jiren, 17 became the last warrior standing.

After winning the tournament, Android 17 used the Super Dragon Balls to wish back all the universes that were destroyed. Android 17 outlasting the series protagonist (even if it was only for a few seconds) was one of the biggest surprises of Dragon Ball Super.
