It is no secret that Goku has recently unlocked a level of power that rivals that of the strongest gods in Dragon Ball’s universe, but he actually reached god-tier power way before the events of Dragon Ball Super–something that was highlighted by one absolutely hilarious cameo.

In the current continuity of Dragon Ball Super, Goku was introduced to a level of cosmic power that he didn’t even know was possible after meeting his universe’s God of Destruction, Lord Beerus. In Dragon Ball Super chapter 1, Lord Beerus approaches Goku after having a vision of an entity known as a Super Saiyan God. After that initial meeting, Goku and the other Z Fighters do a ritual that unlocks the Super Saiyan God potential within Goku, allowing him to reach that transformation. After getting a taste of divine energy, Goku quickly elevates the form to Super Saiyan Blue, and now, Goku is wielding the angelic power of Ultra Instinct and is by far the strongest he has ever been. While his new power level is impressive, Goku has actually been as strong, if not stronger than a god for decades.

In Dragon Ball chapter 322 by Akira Toriyama, Goku and the Z Fighters are in one of the most stressful situations of their lives. Frieza has just set the entirety of Planet Namek to detonate in less than five minutes, King Kai and the currently dead Z Fighters are coming up with a plan to save everyone which involves using two sets of Dragon Balls and sheer dumb luck, and Goku doesn’t know if he can beat Frieza before the entire planet beneath him explodes. However, before readers are thrown into that anxiety attack of a chapter, the opening page takes readers to a quiet corner of Earth far from the chaos and death of Planet Namek where Yajirobe is sitting peacefully by a fire enjoying a nice meal he just cooked for himself. While he’s eating, Yajirobe thinks to himself, “I wonder what Goku’s doing right now…”.

Dragon Ball Z, Yajirobi Wondering About Goku

The hilarity of this Dragon Ball chapter lies in the juxtaposition the narrative throws at its readers, with Yajirobe blissfully unaware of the world-ending havoc being endured by Goku and the other Z Fighters. What this also achieves, aside from humor, is perspective on how far Goku truly has come throughout the series. When Yajirobe was introduced, his strength was on-par with Goku’s as shown when he killed one of King Piccolo’s minions with a single slice of his sword while Goku was still struggling to kill them. In this chapter, Goku is in the middle of a fight that is literally destroying an entire planet with every punch thrown, while Yajirobe–the man who was once just as strong, if not stronger than Goku–is stuffing his face on the other side of the galaxy with no chance of helping Goku and the others even if he wanted to.

While the first level of Super Saiyan is clearly nowhere near as strong as a God of Destruction, it is a transformation that holds more power than a number of other gods in the Dragon Ball mythos, such as Kami, Korin, and King Kai. This means that Goku has been wielding god-tier power for decades, a fact that was highlighted with Yajirobe’s hilarious Dragon Ball cameo.
