It appears the next Dragon Ball film is in development. The franchise has experienced something of a major resurgence in recent years. Dragon Ball Super, Dragon Ball FighterZ, and more have been released, making notable impacts in pop culture. The most recent movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, was acclaimed and made over $100 million worldwide at the box office.

The Dragon Ball movies are very popular. Though the older ones break continuity, they offered some notable battles and stories. From Cooler's Revenge to Wrath of the Dragon, fans have enjoyed the various films (except perhaps Bio-Broly). The recent film series began with Battle of Gods, serving as a big reintroduction of the franchise. It was followed by a sequel, Resurrection 'F,' which brought back fan favorite Frieza from the dead. Interestingly, rather than go from there, the Dragon Ball Super anime decided to remake the movies. After those storylines, Dragon Ball Super had a few notable arcs, the biggest being the Tournament of Power. Dragon Ball Super: Broly serves as a sequel to the anime, while also being a celebration of the franchise as a whole.

According to Twitter user Goreshx (via ComicBook), a new Dragon Ball movie is already being prepared. This news reportedly comes from the Japanese DVD of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The DVD contains a booklet interview with Akiyo Iyoku, the head of Toei's Dragon Ball Room. According to Iyoku, the team is "steadily making preparations for the next Dragon Ball movie," and it will likely take a "completely different direction." It doesn't seem like momentum is halting for Dragon Ball, because Iyoku says, "I think Dragon Ball will continue from here on out so we want you all to look forward to what’s coming up next!"

Interestingly, Iyoku said there were a lot of things the team couldn't do, so he believes the next story will be "even more incredible." Based on these quotes, it sounds like everyone involved is hard at work crafting a worthy followup to Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Toei has yet to confirm a new movie, or another anime, but it's probably just a matter of time.

There are a couple of things to unpack from Iyoku's quotes. It is interesting that he says the next one will be more spectacular, but also probably going in a much different direction. Broly was an insanely strong opponent in the new movie, forcing Goku and Vegeta to merge into the fan favorite Gogeta. It sounds like the next movie may not feature as powerful of an antagonist, but the story will likely have some kind of unique angle. Dragon Ball fans will have a good time discussing what could happen next.
