One of the many fusion characters to appear in Dragon Ball Heroes is one that fans have wanted to see for decades: the combination of Gohan and Trunks, also known as Gohanks. Ever since its introduction in the Buu Saga, fusion has become an integral part of Dragon Ball’s success over the years. While some fusions are certainly more memorable than others, Dragon Ball Heroes has many fused characters who are exclusive to the manga and game.

In chapter 8 of Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Dark Demon Realm Mission, Xeno Trunks and Gohan are faced with the daunting task of retrieving a Dark Dragon Ball from a fractured point in time. With the Demon Gods always one step ahead of them, it’s imperative that their mission is a success, otherwise the Demon God’s leader will surely be revitalized using the power of the wish. Once Gohan and Trunks arrive at the point in history where the Dark Dragon Ball they’re chasing has landed, they can immediately tell something is wrong. A massive source of ki appears right behind them, and it turns out to be none other than the infamous Lord Slug, a Super Namekian who has now grown to the size of a skyscraper.

In order to stand a chance against the newly empowered Lord Slug, as well as the Demon Gods who have appeared on the scene, Gohan and Trunks determine that their only way to win is through utilizing the Fusion Dance. Having both mastered the technique, Gohan and Trunks quickly align their ki and perform the short ritual dance, transforming into the powerful new warrior Gohanks. Gohanks is able to hold off Lord Slug with a flurry of energy attacks, but their battle is cut short by the appearance of a Dark Dragon Ball-possessed Kid Buu.

Though his time in battle was cut short, Gohanks possesses some unique characteristics as a fused fighter. He is the second fusion in the Dragon Ball series to be composed of two half-Saiyans. Whether this makes him both fully human and fully Saiyan or simply another half Saiyan is not clear. Gohanks is also one of the only fused characters to bring over an item that was carried by one of the fusees prior to performing the dance. In this case, that item is Xeno Trunks’ sword. Since Gohanks is the only fused character who wields a weapon it’s reasonable to assume that either Gohan or Trunks has fully mastered the technique or that the Fusion Dance was always designed for battle to begin with and could always keep weaponry available.

Despite Gohanks’ short-lived appearance, it’s almost indisputable he will return at some point given Dragon Ball Heroes’ tendencies to return to fusion as a plot device. Much like Gotenks, the question still remains if Gohanks can achieve some kind of form that neither fusee could attain on their own. Since Xeno Trunks and Gohan both have opposite transformations —those being Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan 4 — the return of Gohanks could herald a transformation completely unique to the Dragon Ball series.
