The biggest mystery in Dragon Ball still has to be explained: the history of Yamoshi, the Legendary Super Saiyan who was the first to obtain this status and then ascended to the state of Super Saiyan God. Despite being a key character in Dragon Ball's lore, Yamoshi remains almost completely an enigma, but he is the key to understanding the true nature of Super Saiyans.

One thousand years before the events of Dragon Ball, a man of great power and righteousness appeared among the Saiyans of Planet Vegeta. Along with five companions, Yamoshi started a rebellion against the evil Saiyans, who had been in conflict with the good Saiyans for a long time. Cornered by his enemies, Yamoshi awakened to a new power and became the first Super Saiyan. Despite that, he was killed and the evil Saiyan came to be the dominant faction, but the story of the Legendary Super Saiyan was still passed on and arrived to present times. Because of this, Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta and tried to wipe out the Saiyans, but they survived and, later, Goku, Vegeta, and their descendants were able to transform into Super Saiyans, making the legend come true.

In Dragon Ball Super: Battle of the Gods, the God of Destruction Beerus is also spurred into action by a Saiyan legend, but in this case it's about the Super Saiyan God. It turns out, however, that this was also Yamoshi. According to Shenron, quoting the Namekian Book of Legends, the six righteous Saiyans of Planet Vegeta created a ritual to transform one of them into the Super Saiyan God. However, while the Super Saiyan God was initially able to overwhelm the evil Saiyans, his power vanished quickly and he and his comrades are wiped out. This is almost the exact same story as that of the Legendary Super Saiyan, which means that Yamoshi was both the first Super Saiyan and the first to obtain the power of Super Saiyan God, and his actions gave life to many legends.

During Battle of the Gods, Yamoshi's spirit appears during the Super Saiyan God ritual, turning Goku into a Super Saiyan God to battle Beerus. However, despite having such a pivotal role in the origins of the modern Saiyans, Yamoshi remains an obscure character whose life is still shrouded in myth. The conflict between the good and the bad Saiyan is one of the most interesting parts of the Dragon Ball lore, but it still has to be explored by the series. For example, it could be used to explain Broly's own Legendary Super Saiyan transformation, described as a 'demonic' genetic mutation that appears only every one thousand years. This could be a unique trait of the evil Saiyan line, while the classic Super Saiyan used by Goku and the others is inherited from Yamoshi.

Dragon Ball's Saiyan lore can get a little confusing, but it's still one of the most fascinating aspects of the series. The history of Yamoshi is key to understanding the path taken by his descendants, and it could be the basis for an incredible arc in the Dragon Ball Super manga or anime that fans would surely appreciate. This is why Dragon Ball, at some point, will have to address the mystery of the first Super Saiyan, Yamoshi, the Legendary Super Saiyan God.
