Dragon Ball Z: 15 Characters Who Are Even More Powerful Than Goku

What do you think of when you hear the phrase “Over 9000”? This is perhaps the scene that cemented Goku’s power in the minds of fans, whether or not it made a whole lot of sense. Goku is the well-known and well-loved hero from the Dragon Ball series.

Driven by his desire to become as strong as he can, and breaking all of his limits to do so, Goku has become a legendary character. From the outside looking in, you would probably assume he is the strongest character in the series. If you assume this, you would be incorrect.

There have actually been several characters to give Goku a run for his money, from characters like Raditz — his Saiyan brother from the early episodes of Dragon Ball Z — to a narcissistic Android by the name of Cell. With the show moving forward, in terms of power and hilarious filler episodes, it is not surprising that there would now be a full cast of characters more powerful than this lovable hero. The characters that have made it onto this list all have a distinct advantage over the hero for various reasons.

From the intellect and potential of Gohan to the omnipotent powers of Zen-oh, here are 15 Characters Who Are Even More Powerful Than Goku.

15 Gohan

From the start of the series, Gohan has shown a lot of potential. What sets him apart from his father, Goku, is exactly that. When the elder Supreme Kai helps him unlock this potential, he did something even Goku didn’t imagine: he surpassed Super Saiyan 3 without leaving his base form.

Without training between the time of DBZ and Dragon Ball Super, he is able to get back in peak fighting condition in a very short time before the Universal Survival Arc.

Even as a child, Gohan surpassed Goku on multiple occasions.

During Goku’s fight with Raditz, his power level skyrocketed well above Raditz, Goku, and Piccolo’s. He shows his power again when pummeling a third transformation Frieza. Perhaps his most memorable display is when he achieves his Super Saiyan 2 form and defeats Cell. This, combined with his superior intellect, gives Gohan an edge over his father.

14 Spike the Devilman

Spike the Devilman Dragon Ball Z

Who would have thought Bandages the Mummy suffering his defeat by a child Goku in the Devil’s Toilet would then lead to a battle with one of Dragon Ball’s most powerful characters? Okay, so Spike the Devilman is, by all accounts, weaker than even a child version of Goku.

He does have one thing going for him: the Devilmite Beam.

The Devilmite Beam is one of the most powerful techniques in the Dragon Ball universe. The only one to have ever used it in the series is Spike the Devilman, which earns him this place on the list. By pointing his finger and shooting a swirly pink laser at his opponent, he takes the negative energy of the target and expands it until their heart explodes.

If he met Goku again, things could work out very differently, as Goku has achieved Super Saiyan, which uses anger as a trigger.

13 Arale Norimaki

Arale from Dr. Slump

Yes, the little android girl from the Dr. Slump manga that inspired the infamous poop emoji has shown that she is stronger than Goku.  She was the focal point of the episode “Goku vs Arale A Ridiculous Battle Will End the Earth?!” in which she split the planet in half and defeated Vegeta in a gag comic style battle, canon, nonetheless.

In her appearance, she childishly pushed Vegeta into a wall and headbutted him across the planet. She also matched Goku in strength by evenly matching his Kamehameha with a blast of her own.

During the match, Goku tells Bulma and Hercule that he doesn’t know if he can beat her. Of course, this excites him, as he and Arale share the same idea of fun.

12 Hit

Dragon Ball Super, Hit vs Goku tournament match

Hit is a 1000-year-old alien who challenged Goku on two occasions, netting a win and a draw. The Universe 6 assassin’s primary ability that gives him the edge is called “Time Skip”. Possessed by very few in the DB universe, Time Skip allows Hit to jump forward 1/10th of a second into the future, giving him the drop on his opponents. His second uncanny ability is his learning capacity in the midst of a fight.

During Goku and Hit’s fight, the assassin evolves his Time Skip. Goku has the edge with his speed and power, but this provides Hit the proper motivation to push his Time Skip to a half of a second - five times longer than his initial capacity. This gets him a win over Goku and pushes Goku beyond his breaking point.

After Goku’s loss, he suffers from - as King Kai puts it - Delayed Onset Energy Disorder.

11 Android 17

In the Android Saga of DBZ, brother and sister Androids 17 and 18 were created with the sole purpose of killing Goku. After Goku lost his fight to Android 19 due to a form of futuristic heart disease (and using energy blasts on an energy-absorbing robot) it’s revealed that Vegeta has obtained his Super Saiyan form, surpassing Goku. SS Vegeta is easily defeated by 18, who is the weaker of the Android pair.

Android 17 has one distinct feature over Goku: a limitless energy supply.

Preparing for the tournament held by Zen-oh, even the lovable, yet dimwitted Goku knew 17 would be of great benefit to the team. Of course, this led to a fight between the two, in which 17 fought the Z fighter in his Super Saiyan Blue form to a stand-still. Matching SSB in speed and strength, plus a limitless energy supply, definitely gives Android 17 the edge.

10 Anilaza

Not only is Anilaza more powerful than Goku, but his true power might just be impossible to calculate. He is a fusion character comprised of Koitsukai, Panchia, Bollarator, and Paparoni. Although he has only made one appearance in the series, he left quite an impression. He single-handedly took on SSB Goku, Gohan, SSB Vegeta, Freeza, Android 18, and Android 17 all at the same time.

His physique also lends him a hefty advantage against Goku.

Anilaza is one of the largest characters seen in the Dragonball Universe, standing with the likes of the Saiyan Great Apes and Lord Slug. Given that he is comprised of organic and non-organic materials, it would seem that he would share the benefit of the Androids’ unlimited energy supply.

9 Gogeta

Akira Toriyama, the creator of the DB universe, hasn’t given us many solid facts about the fusion power levels. So, it's hard to say how strong the Metamoran fusion between Goku and Vegeta really is. But it’s clear through his first non-canon appearance fighting Janemba, and his short, yet epic appearance in GT to take down Omega Shenron, that he is undoubtedly stronger than Goku himself.

In the fight with Janemba, as a Super Saiyan 3, Goku can barely hold his own against the overly plump creature. After Janemba transforms himself into a demon-like creature with a sword, Goku and Vegeta are forced to perform the fusion dance and join together as Gogeta.

As Gogeta, they are able to make short work of Janemba - a feat even a SSJ3 Goku could not accomplish.

His strength is further demonstrated when he takes down Omega Shenron in similar fashion, just as SSJ4.

8 Kefla

The Dragon Ball series has introduced two new female characters recently. The Saiyan warriors from universe 11 are named Kale and Caulifla. During the Universal Survival Arc, these two warriors find themselves face-to-face with a true blue Super Saiyan in Goku. This causes them to use the Potara earrings to fuse themselves into Kefla, a Super Saiyan warrior that surpasses even Goku in terms of raw power.

It is very apparent that Kefla is inexperienced in comparison to her Super Saiyan predecessor.

What she lacks in experience, she makes up for in force.

With the fan fusion formula in place (more on that later), this warrior would have an extreme advantage in brute strength due to to to Kale’s Broly-like Super Saiyan form and Caulifla’s ability to transform into Super Saiyan 2.

7 Vegito

Like Gogeta, Vegito is a fusion of Goku and Vegeta with one large difference: Portara earrings. Fans speculate that the power of a fusion can be calculated by adding the max power of the base form of the first person to the max power level of the second person, then multiplying the result by two. Like this: (max a + max b)*2.

This is significant because, through the use of the Portara, Goku and Vegeta don’t have to make their power levels match like they do with the fusion dance, allowing more of Goku’s power to be used for the transformation.

The first time we see this powerhouse is during the fight with Buuhan.

In his base form, he shows amazing strength smacking around Majiin Buu while taunting the villain. Vegito later holds his own against Zamasu — a task Goku failed — through the utilization of SSB.

6 Zamasu/Goku Black

Zamasu aka Evil Goku in Dragon Ball Super

Whether call him Zamasu or Goku Black, he is definitely stronger than Goku himself. Zamasu was a Kai who - through the power of the Dragon Balls, murder, and a time ring - managed to take Goku’s body. Having the body of one of the strongest Saiyans, along with his fighting prowess and evil mind, has cemented him as a force to be reckoned with.

During Goku and Zamasu’s first battle, Goku is immediately pushed into using his Super Saiyan form, while Zamasu is able to remain in his base form.

After being struck by Goku, Zamasu comments, “This pain will make me stronger.”

This is a key point to Zamasu’s intellect, as he is aware that every time a Saiyan fights, they can become stronger through injury. This is referred to as a Zenkai boost by fans. Black uses this to his advantage, quite frequently enabling him to get the best of Goku.

5 Toppo

This hefty, mustachioed giant just about squeezed the life out of Goku in his introduction. Toppo is the leader of the Pride Troopers and is also a candidate to become the next God of Destruction for Universe 11. He is a very rotund character in the beginning, but after the reveal of his God of Destruction powers, his physique drastically changes to Hulk-like proportions.

Chosen by Belmod — Universe 11’s current God of Destruction — for his stand-up sense of justice and the accomplishments of the Pride Troopers, Toppo displayed his full power while delivering a ferocious beating to Frieza and Android 17. He was eventually knocked out of the tournament by Vegeta when Vegeta resorted to using a self-destructive technique.

Although he lost the fight, he proved he could stand toe-toe with three of Universe 7’s warriors simultaneously, a task even Goku has not accomplished.

4 Jiren

Jiren the Grey is a cold and stoic extra-terrestrial from Universe 11. When he was young, his parents were killed by an evildoer, prompting him to become as strong as he could. He was found by his master after his parent's murder, and through this was able to gain new comrades. He, along with his master and newfound comrades, confronted the evil-doer again, but to no avail. Jiren’s comrades and master were killed.

Jiren is the only opponent to have faced and defeated Goku’s Ultra Instinct transformation.

After this, he decided to one-up Toppo by taking on SSB Goku, SSB Vegeta, Android 17, and a golden-powered Frieza. Thus far in the epic battle, he has pushed them harder than any other opponent. Some of his accomplishments so far include forcing Android 17 to self-destruct to protect Goku and Vegeta and erasing a Kamehameha from a Kaioken SSB Goku.

3 Beerus

Super Saiyan 3 Goku attacks Beerus in Dragon Ball Z Battle of Gods

The God of Destruction, Beerus, has unimaginable power and is prone to temper tantrums. When he awoke after 39 years, he was told by his caretaker/mentor, Whis, that a Saiyan had defeated Frieza. He used this information to track down Goku, who in his excitement, challenged the God of Destruction to a fight.

Beerus displayed his strength with a single karate chop to Goku’s neck, rendering him unconscious.

Beerus took to Earth to find the Super Saiyan God — not knowing he had already defeated him — and found himself fighting Goku again. Goku fought a valiant battle but still lost in the end. Vegeta and Goku both recognize the strength of Beerus, which is why they both pursue obtaining Whis as there mentor. Whis once told them that their powers are to a tree what Beerus’ is to a spiraly mountain.

2 Whis

Whis in Dragon Ball Super

The food-loving angel who takes care of and mentors Universe 7’s God of Destruction is also stronger than both Beerus and Goku. Akira Toriyama at one point stated, “If Beerus’ strength is 10, [Super Saiyan] God would be right about 6.” He later stated, “Incidentally, I guess Whis would be a 15.”

Although we don’t see Whis actually fight a lot in the series, he has displayed overwhelming strength, speed, and stamina.

Oddly enough, those attributes are not his most important, even though in those categories he does outclass Goku. He can be seen avoiding Goku and Vegeta’s attacks with grace in almost all of their training sessions. Perhaps his most stand-out feature is his ability to rewind time three minutes.

His intellect is what truly makes him special. Without his understanding of Ki and fighting, Goku and Vegeta would never be able to challenge Beerus.

1 Zen-oh

Zen Oh Omni King in Dragon Ball Super

Zen-oh isn’t called the Omni King for nothing. He is basically the god of all of the universes in the Drago Ball series.

Zen-oh has a childlike appearance and demeanor, disguising how powerful he truly is.

He has demonstrated powers that put him well above that of Goku in terms of power - and just about everything else.

You could possibly say that Goku, Vegeta, and Trunks defeated Zamasu, but ultimately it was Zen-oh who erased him from existence. He has also shown the power to erase entire universes in the blink of an eye. More impressively, he can erase the God of Destruction — and all of that universe’s most powerful inhabitants — without breaking a sweat.

Goku is currently competing in Zen-oh’s tournament, fighting for his universe and his own survival from the omnipotent god.
