EA teased fans with a brief reveal of the new Dragon Age and Need for Speed games during the EA Play Live 2020 Showcase. The event was the publisher's attempt to show off what its various first-party studios have been working on ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X later this year. That included footage from developers such as DICE and Motive as well as BioWare and Criterion.
Both Dragon Age and Need for Speed remain popular with fans. Despite lackluster reviews, the racing franchise continues to sell millions of copies with each installment. Whereas, Dragon Age has been one of the better RPG series of the last decade. The first title in the series, Dragon Age: Origins, introduced players to the fictional land of Ferelden and fans have been wanting to revisit that world for many years.
As part of the much-anticipated event, which was streamed on YouTube, the publisher showcased two new titles. These appeared to be short trailers for both a new Dragon Age game alongside the latest Need for Speed title. Although EA didn't explicitly refer to either by name, they certainly appear to look like entries from their respective series, while the footage shown was confirmed to be from BioWare and Criterion. Unfortunately, the two trailers had very little in the way substance, providing players with just a glimpse of what they can expect to see in the new titles.
The last Dragon Age game was the 2014 title Dragon Age: Inquisition. The series has been dormant since with EA seemingly switching from an emphasis on RPG titles like the series and Mass Effect. A fourth entry in the franchise was announced in 2018 but very little information has been revealed about the game, a trend that has continued with these latest reveals. Meanwhile, the last installment in the illegal street racing series Need for Speed came late last year. Need for Speed Heat was the 24th title in the long-running series, yet it failed to break out of the mixed critical reception the franchise has been associated with in recent times.
With the new Dragon Age game not expected to release until 2022, it makes some sense that EA would not want to give too much away about the title. After all, with so much development time left, elements of the title could change drastically and the company is likely to want to keep some features and advancements back to build up hype nearer to the release date. However, it makes less sense for the company to be coy about a new Need for Speed game, especially when the franchise has an almost annual launch schedule. Hopefully, fans will get to see more from both titles in the coming months.
