Gamers were given a treat during The Game Awards 2020 with a new trailer for Dragon Age. The trickle of information about the fourth game in the popular series has been slow coming over the past several years, with very little concrete details about what players could expect to see in the next game. The trailer that released at The Game Awards 2020, however, offered players some insight into what BioWare may have in store, as it appears that Dragon Age has also dropped the number '4' from its title.

Waiting for updates on the new game was made more nerve-wracking in the past weeks leading up to the awards, when it was announced that Dragon Age's Mark Darrah, the long time Executive Producer of the game, had decided to leave the team. The loss of such a big name could potentially mean turbulence for the game, and it could spell trouble for the future of the series. It might also mean big changes to mechanics and storylines many might not want revamped. It is possible that the shift in the development team might have lead to the implied change to Dragon Age's name, as the new Executive Producer, Christian Dailey, starts pushing the game's development into motion.

The drop of the number '4' from Dragon Age's name doesn't mean that this isn't a direct sequel for the series, however. If the game receives a content specific title, it will follow in the shoes of Dragon Age: Inquisition, the third installment of the series. The trailers for Dragon Age have also confirmed not just the return of Solas, but potentially Varric Tethras from Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Varric, who has often been the story-teller in Dragon Age, was recognized as the narrator for the new trailer. This suggests that old faces, both friend and foe, could be assisting the protagonist in this new Dragon Age game.

It is also possible Dragon Age's new game may take place in an area fans have never had the chance to explore. Many have speculated that the Dragon Age setting could be Tevinter, the home of Dorian Pavus from Inquisition. If the new game takes place in Tevinter, it will be a chance to see some of the struggles and difficulties Dorian spoke of in the third game, and explore the rich history Tevinter possesses within the series. There could also be the potential to run into characters like Dorian himself. Unfortunately, at this time there isn't enough evidence to truly know where the game may take place or which characters from past games will be in the new story, but from everything players have seen so far, it appears to be a continuation, not a reboot. Despite not being called Dragon Age 4, this is the next in the series, and it will likely have its own subtitle like Dragon Age: Inquisition did.

With no gameplay to be seen in The Game Awards trailer for Dragon Age, it is still unclear what the game may look like in a more finished form. The beautifully-animated scenes displayed more teasers than actual playable content, and many may feel that the short sequence of scenes and character hints wasn't enough after the long wait for Dragon Age updates. Hopefully BioWare will have more to come for fans of Dragon Age, and potentially an idea of what their character may be doing in the series' next adventure.
