Warning: SPOILERS for Netflix's Dracula.

Will there be a Dracula season 2 on Netflix and when will it release? The creators of Sherlock, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, breathed new life into the legendary vampire with their riveting new series. Structured similarly to Sherlock, Dracula season 1 is formatted as three 90-minute episodes and they each aired on BBC One in the UK on January 1-3, 2020 before the whole season became available to stream in the United States on Netflix.

With Danish actor Claes Bang assuming the title role as the aristocratic but deadly vampire, Dracula follows the story of Bram Stoker's novel - and then wildly diverges from it. Just as in Stoker's story, Dracula begins with English solicitor Jonathan Harker (Jon Heffernan) visiting the Count to negotiate a real estate deal only to find himself the vampire's prisoner in the first episode, "The Rules of the Beast". The second episode, "Blood Vessel", details Count Dracula's sea voyage on the Demeter and the chaos the vampire reaps on board. The final episode, "The Dark Compass", shows Dracula's arrival in England. Throughout the series, Moffat and Gatiss go beyond Stoker's writing to explore Dracula's legend and character, adding nuances and intriguing new twists to the mythology while also nodding to the classic Hammer horror films about the king of the vampires.

But if audiences find the new Dracula show to be a bloody good time, naturally, the question of whether there will be a Dracula season 2 will arise. Here is everything we know so far about whether Moffat and Gatiss' Count Dracula will return.

There Are No Plans For Dracula Season 2

Claes Bang As Dracula in Netflix Dracula

Thus far, no plans for Dracula season 2 have been announced by the BBC or Netflix. Moffat and Gatiss' Dracula was commissioned by the BBC in October 2018 and the series came together quickly; filming took place from March 2019 to August 2019 to make its January 1, 2020 air date in the UK.

However, if Dracula proves to be a hit, it's not hard to imagine that a second season will be ordered. Since Dracula is formatted like Sherlock and airs in a similar time slot in the UK, it's possible that Dracula season 2 could be Sherlock's replacement as a series that airs at the beginning of each year, with the horror series streaming internationally on Netflix immediately afterward.

Who Would Be In The Cast Of Dracula Season 2?

It would be safe to assume Claes Bang would return as Count Dracula in Dracula season 2. After all, the titular vampire is the "hero" of this story as he commits his evil deeds. Who else would (or could) join Dracula in a second season would largely depend on who survives Dracula season 1.

However, Moffat and Gatiss not only adapted many key characters from Bram Stoker's novel, but they also created a number of fascinating new characters. So, if Dracula's showrunners wish to leave all aspects of the book behind and pit the vampire king against all-new foes, they're more than capable of creating memorable new heroic and villainous characters to face the diabolical Count.

What Would Dracula Season 2's Story Be About?

Dracula is an immortal villain so there are no real limits to what kinds of horror stories could be told with the vampire, and that also includes where and when. Since Dracula has been alive since the 15th century, a prequel detailing his adventures even further back in the past could be possible, including showing his origin when he was Vlad the Impaler.

However, Dracula episode 3, "The Dark Compass", had a shocking time jump that brought the vampire into present-day London. And despite the way Dracula ended, the beauty of the vampire is that even if the Count is dead, he could still be magically made "undead" to further continue his evil ways against anyone, anywhere.
