The talented cast of Hulu's Dopesick delves into the heartbreaking truth of the opioid crisis in the U.S., bringing those characters and real-life figures to life. Over the span of eight episodes, the miniseries focuses on the human aspect of the opioid epidemic, telling the stories of those whose lives were affected by OxyContin. Using a cast of acclaimed actors and actresses, Dopesick provides a human face to an epidemic that has affected hundreds of thousands of Americans.

Based on the book Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company That Addicted America by Beth Macy, Dopesick tells the story of how OxyContin and opioids ravaged the United States and the cover-up that allowed it to spread. OxyContin, which was released by Purdue Pharma in 1996, is a highly addictive painkiller that was misleadingly sold as non-addictive to doctors and patients alike. During its initial release, Purdue targeted small, blue-collar towns in rural areas — and before long these quiet towns saw spikes in deaths and crime unlike anything they'd ever seen before. It's a dramatized take on a story covered before in documentaries like Netflix's opioid epidemic documentary The Pharmacist.
