Hulu’s Reboot premiered on September 20, 2022, bringing another original show to the streaming service. Although Hulu has quite a few shows through its partnership with FX, there have been plenty of successes for the service where original material is concerned. However, some Redditors don’t feel the same way.

Redditors have been vocal about things they didn’t enjoy in everything, from a heavy-handed show like Dopesick to a romantic comedy like Love, Victor. Although these shows have had a great reception overall, not all Hulu shows can please everyone, with a few minority opinions about popular dramas and comedies.

The Handmaid's Tale Lacks Subtlety In Its Storytelling

A woman looks outside the window of her car in The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale is set in a dystopian timeline where an American Civil War has caused a totalitarian regime where fertile women are kept as prisoners. Redditor RusevReigns thinks “it's as on the nose, expository and heavy-handed about its themes as it can possibly get.”

There are quite a few terrible things The Handmaid’s Tale characters do for survival, which is difficult to be subtle about since the show’s intention is to display the horrible treatment in the flesh. The Redditor isn’t wrong about the obvious trauma on display, but viewers and critics have responded well to how it conveys the thematic quality of The Handmaid’s Tale.

Looking for Alaska Has A Cliché Plotline

John Green’s book adaptations are similar since they stick to tropes found in the young-adult genre. Redditor Stablerlamp “feels like they could all be one story because they all have the same plot.” Looking for Alaska is about a teenager who falls in love with a girl called Alaska but has to come to terms with the fact that they can’t be together.

The Redditor makes a fair point about the similarities between John Green’s other works since Paper Towns and The Fault in Our Stars were along the same lines. But that doesn’t take into account that the reasons for the characters’ inability to be together are complex to their own situations. These range from illness to personal demons, making their dynamic unique.

The Main Characters Aren't Sympathetic In Nine Perfect Strangers

Redditor harmony-rose liked the characters in Nine Perfect Strangers but couldn’t feel sympathy due to their belief that “everything just seemed to happen quickly and there wasn't really any time to really feel for any of them.”

Nine Perfect Strangers is about people coming for a retreat where their past secrets gradually come to light. Most viewers actually found the characters’ motivations sympathetic because the series made sure to show their point of view. But it’s also easy to see why certain fans didn’t relate to the cast since there were so many to follow with a limited number of episodes.

Pam & Tommy Shouldn't Have Been Made

Pam & Tommy is generally seen as a great biopic, garnering multiple Emmy nominations that also included a nod for Outstanding Limited Or Anthology Series. Redditor ubrobobo doesn’t buy into the hype, writing that “to take a high profile case of it and exploit it for a TV show is ridiculous.”

Since the premise involves the relationship between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, the subject matter was certainly controversial. However, the show turned out to be a critical success, with the majority of viewers being sympathetic toward the main duo.

The Main Characters Should Just Focus On Being Single In Love, Victor

Victor looks at his friends in school in Love, Victor

Love, Victor’s main outline is about the titular character coming out and beginning to love, and this means viewers want to see him and his friends in relationships. However, Redditor murrrrmaidman says they are “not on any “ships,” and most of the characters need to be single and work on themselves.”

It would make sense for a character to figure out things on their own, but despite this unpopular opinion, Love, Victor does show how the influence of a love interest can make a person see things more clearly. There’s also the point that Victor needs to have a romance in order to come to terms with his sexuality since he was scared to do that before.

Dopesick Is Too Preachy

Dopesick centers around the opioid epidemic and how it affects everyone involved from individuals to the pharmaceuticals that make these pills. Redditor Threecatsdancing thought that it “felt very preachy, and then the storyline seemed telegraphed from the first 15 minutes.”

This is certainly an unpopular opinion since Dopesick was heavily lauded for focusing on real issues with a touch of compassion. The show garnered numerous Emmy nominations, winning for Michael Keaton’s leading performance. It’s also difficult not to have a relatively preachy tone, given what the show’s premise is supposed to be.

Future Man Tries Too Hard With Its Comedy

A man and woman wear gear and pose for the camera in Future Man

Future Man follows a mild-mannered man who is suddenly whisked into the future by video game characters to stop a catastrophe. The premise sounds like an action-packed sci-fi, but the show is mainly comedic. Redditor Trapped_On_Earth “feels like it’s more annoying than funny.”

Future Man relies a lot on cringe humor that comes with the outrageous outline it features. The basic idea is to find the funny material to be satirical of the usual sci-fi genre offerings. This can be hard to please for those expecting a straight-up action series, although that’s not what Future Man intends to deliver.

Only Murders In The Building Has An Uneven Style And Presentation

Two men and a woman stand looking confused in Only Murders In The Building

There are more than a few funny quotes in Only Murders in the Building, a mystery comedy series following a whodunit format. Redditor spuddyh3ll feels the series suffers from Selena Gomez’s “monotone acting and the show leaning a lot into the format of a true-crime podcast.”

The blend of mystery, thriller, and humor can be confusing, but viewers have mostly enjoyed Gomez’s chemistry with Martin Short and Steve Martin – her monotone style is meant to contrast the comedians’ kooky attitude. Only Murders in the Building has also been praised since the "true-crime podcast" style is a departure from the norm in the whodunit genre.

The Bear Is Very Slow In Its Pacing

A man and a woman working in a kitchen in The Bear

The Bear is a comedy-drama about a young chef who has to run his family restaurant after his brother's death. The show deals with heavy themes of loss and moving on, which Redditor lizkingwt claims makes the “30-minute show feel like a 55-minute show.”

The pacing of The Bear is kept at a slower rate to accommodate the cooking scenes as well as the sense of grief that is hanging around the characters’ heads. The Bear has received unanimous acclaim for how it deals with its themes, so the pacing issue might just come down to personal perception for the Redditor.
