DOOM Eternal developer id Software is working on a new VR-exclusive game. The emergence of VR is charting a new direction for video games and developers are definitely taking notice. Several prominent video game franchises and genres are exploring virtual reality options as each new year brings fresh technological innovations that are sure to expand the scope of gaming forever.

The director of the latest Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond believes VR is the future for first-person shooter titles. The game is completely VR and is bringing player immersion to a whole new level. The industry has been making significant strides over the last few years and looks set to continue pushing the boundaries of gaming in the foreseeable future. Having the chance to explore the Great Plateau from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in virtual reality is another indication of the near-limitless the potential of VR. For now, it is only a question of price and execution.

According to DSOGaming, an Australian classification has identified a virtual reality game being developed by id Software as Project 2021A. The classification confirms the game will feature online components and "high-impact violence." The classification has awarded the VR game an R18+ rating, which is consistent with the ratings of previous games id Software has worked on. At this point, there is no solid release date confirmed. It is entirely possible that the VR game in development is not even slated to release this year, despite the codename suggesting otherwise. It's easy to speculate that id Software is looking to add a VR mode to DOOM Eternal, but it's entirely likely that this game has nothing to do with the DOOM franchise.

id Software has been a major part of the gaming industry since its formation in 1991. The video game developer has been behind highly acclaimed series such as Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein, among others. id's latest title, DOOM Eternal, launched in March of last year and has been a major success. A port for the brutal game was even added to the Nintendo Switch by the studio Panic Button, so there's no sign of stopping for either the classic franchise or its studio.

id Software's involvement in a brand-new VR game is understandably being met with excitement, and the speculation is only going to increase from this point onward. id Software enjoys a superb relationship with its fans, and they are sure to follow any future progress with optimism.
