The first three games in the Doom series have been ported to modern systems as part of a surprise announcement that was made at QuakeCon 2019. QuakeCon 2019 was promised to house some big announcements from Bethesda, and the publisher wasted little time in delivering some of them.

The keynote address at QuakeCon 2019 featured announcements concerning several upcoming Bethesda games, including an extended segment discussing the new features in Doom EternalIt wasn't just the upcoming games that were given attention at QuakeCon, as it was revealed that Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 have been ported to modern systems and are available to purchase right now.

The reveal of three classic Doom titles being ported to modern systems turned out to not be as surprising as Bethesda might have hoped, as the official Nintendo UK website had accidentally leaked the arrival of the three games on the Nintendo Switch only a few hours before QuakeCon was broadcast. It was originally speculated that the games were just coming to the Nintendo Switch, but it was confirmed at QuakeCon that Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 would also be coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox OneDoom and Doom II are also available on Android and iOS devices. The official Bethesda Twitter page has now been updated with a trailer for all three games.

The console versions of Doom, Doom II, and Doom 3 are lacking some of the features of their original PC counterparts, as Doom and Doom II only possess four-player local co-op/deathmatch modes, while Doom 3 has no multiplayer component at all. Doom does come with the Episode IV: Thy Flesh Consumed expansion, Doom II has the community-made expansion known as The Master Levels, while Doom 3 comes with both the Resurrection of Evil and The Lost Missions expansions.

The Nintendo Switch has received a lot of love from Bethesda, which has included a port of the 2016 version of Doom and a version of Doom Eternal for the system, which has helped to feed rumors that the Doom Slayer will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC Smash fighterDoom could give Tetris a run for its money in the port department, so it's no surprise that it's being made available on even more systems. It might come as a surprise to learn that Doom has received few official ports on handheld systems, with the Game Boy Advance port being the most well-known. The portability factor is a huge asset to the Nintendo Switch version of Doom and its sequels, as it has been attempted so rarely. One thing is for certain - Doom is a great fit on the Switch and it's exactly the sort of summer port that could sell by the boatload.
