Ahead of the show's season 4 premiere, showrunner and executive producer Jeremy Carver has addressed Doom Patrol season 5's chances. As Titans season 4, part 1, has finished its run and is going on a hiatus, Doom Patrol season 4, part 1, is taking over its slot on HBO Max starting on December 8. Similar to Titans season 4, the first two episodes of Doom Patrol season 4, part 1, will drop next Thursday before airing subsequent episodes weekly until January 5, 2023.

Screen Rant recently chatted with the Doom Patrol showrunner as Carver previewed what is coming up in season 4, but also looking beyond the new season. With all the changes happening at HBO Max due to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, Carver was asked whether or not chances are good for Doom Patrol season 5 as the HBO-branded streaming service has yet to renew it for another year. According to Carver, there can always be more seasons of Doom Patrol, and despite the major stakes in season 4, they are not treating this as if this is the final season, sharing the following:

Well, let me start backward and delicately with what you're asking. But there can always be more of Doom Patrol, there can always be more, and we are prepared for more. I think at the same time, in this season, the characters are experiencing something that they've never experienced before. That's not just impending death; it's actually growing old. When one actually has the experience of growing old, it forces them to ask questions about themselves, their lives, and where they want things to end up before they might die in a way that can feel like an ending. But it is just another frontier in terms of the emotional arcs that we're asking our Doomies to embark on.

Doom Patrol Season 4 characters walking in a line

As of right now, it will be quite some time before HBO Max and Warner Bros. TV make any decisions on Doom Patrol season 5. They will likely assess its chances after Doom Patrol season 4 part 1 or/and 2 has aired on the streaming platform. With Peter Safran and James Gunn as DC Studios' co-CEOs, however, Doom Patrol's season 5 chances could be boding well under their leadership. Since their roles went into effect on November 1, they have made it clear that they are working on a 10-year-plan for the DCU that involves TV, film, and animation.

While it happened before Gunn and Safran were appointed as the bosses for DC Studios, HBO Max had already gone ahead and renewed Peacemaker for season 2 while also handing out a season 4 pick-up for Harley Quinn. Even though their roles will focus heavily on the DCU, Gunn has strongly indicated that there will be room for projects outside the franchise, including the animated Harley Quinn series. With both products being adult-orientated in featuring mature humor and drama, Doom Patrol falls into those categories, meaning the series could be something they want to see continue under their management.

Something that has also always been in Doom Patrol's favor is it has always been one of the most critically acclaimed DC TV shows. Outside of reportedly doing really well on HBO Max, and where else it's available internationally, time will tell if Doom Patrol scores another season. Based on Carver's comments alone, they definitely have more stories to tell about the beloved band of heroes. At the very least, if Doom Patrol is closing in on its end, the HBO Max executives could at least give the DC TV drama one final season and let the writers end it on a proper note that gives a satisfactory ending for viewers.
