Doom Patrol season 4 has been renewed at HBO Max. The series, which began airing in 2019, details the adventures of a team of superpowered outcasts led by a mad scientist with a heart of gold. It is based on the series of comics created by Arnold Drake, Bob Haney, and Bruno Premiani that began running in 1963. Doom Patrol stars April Bowlby, Diane Guerrero, Matt Bomer, Brendan Fraser, Timothy Dalton, Joivan Wade, Riley Shanahan, and Matthew Zuk. Doom Patrol season 3 premiered on HBO Max on Thursday, September 23, and is currently airing.

The third season sees the team disbanding after being struck by a tragedy following the conclusion of the conflict between Dorothy and the Candlemaker. However, their various existential crises must be set aside when Madame Rouge (Michelle Gomez) arrives from the future on an important mission she can't remember. As if that wasn't enough to handle, Doom Patrol season 3 also includes the Brotherhood of Evil and the Sisterhood of Dada. Madame Rouge isn't the only character who time travels in the season, which extends its chronological antics to several different characters, including sending Rita Farr AKA Elasti-Girl back to 1917.

At the global fan event DC FanDome 2021, it was announced that HBO Max will be renewing Doom Patrol for a fourth season. Matt Bomer, who provides the voice for Larry Trainor AKA Negative Man (Matthew Zuk plays the bandage-wrapped figure seen onscreen) made a special appearance during the live stream. HBO Max also premiered a trailer for the second half of Doom Patrol season 3.

It is too early for cast, plot, and release date announcements for Doom Patrol season 4, especially considering that the events of season 3 haven't concluded yet. However, it's likely that the main cast has already been contracted for another outing, so the surviving characters are almost certain to return. Once Doom Patrol's season 3 finale airs, the team will have had some time to prep the next season, so news - especially a release date - might come hot on its heels.

This renewal coming before the third season is even finished running certainly belies that the show is garnering solid streaming numbers. The season 3 renewal for Doom Patrol wasn't announced until about a month after the second season concluded, so the time frame has certainly improved. If this trend continues in the right direction, fans can be certain to get even more seasons of the surreal superhero series down the line.
