The Doom Patrol is back and stranger than ever before, as they face the Weight of the Worlds this July. But with the new lineup of DC's Young Animal books following behind them, this mind-bending adventure shows writer Gerard Way's team may still just be warming up.

From the outset, the Young Animal imprint was promised to be a different sort of creation: talented writers and artists letting their imaginations run wild, with writer Gerard Way's Doom Patrol leading the charge. After the "pop up imprint" completed its first run of stories, fans were told that a new batch was in the oven, with Way promising "high doses of cosmic weirdness and positivity." In our first preview of Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1, the book is living up to the claim, and then some.

In the time since Doom Patrol launched DC's Young Animal and its "books for dangerous humans," the TV series has made them a household name for thousands more comic book fans. But based on these first pages of what co-writers Gerard Way and Jeremy Lambert, and artist James Harvey have in store, fans are headed for completely new levels of outlandish adventuring.

Picking up where the series more or less left off in Doom Patrol #12, "Issue Thirteen" finds Robotman back in a human body, Jane in search of peace, And Larry a confirmed dog person. That last one isn't even the weirdest part, either. Take a look at the preview pages below:

The upcoming leg of Gerard Way’s Doom Patrol series sees the return of artist Nick Derington on covers, and a host of accomplished illustrators beginning with James Harvey, whose style is on full display in these preview pages. Later issues will be calling on the talents of Doc Shaner, Nick Pitarra, Becky Cloonan and more.

The continuation of the story in Doom Patrol: Weight of the Worlds #1 may be coming on July 3rd, but time is running out for readers to call their local comic book shop and make sure there's a copy coming with their name on it. Some fans feared the worst when Way confirmed Doom Patrol was going to be delayed, but with the new series promising to find the team "embroiled in the divorce proceedings of feuding cosmic entities," it's clear that the time away hasn't changed the heart of this comic one bit.
