Doom director Tony Giglio has confirmed the famous Barons Of Hell demons won’t make an appearance in the movie reboot. Doom the video game recently celebrated its 25th anniversary, and it’s the title that made first-person shooters one of the most popular genres in gaming. The simple plot found a lone marine stranded on Mars having to deal with an invasion from Hell, which he does with the aid of shotguns, chainsaws, plasma rifles and a very big gun known as the BFG. Doom’s relentless gameplay, creepy enemies and fantastic level design made it an instant classic.

Doom would spawn a long-running series, with the most recent release - 2016’s Doom - receiving near-universal acclaim. The game also inspired a 2005 movie adaptation, starring Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban. Sadly, the movie proved to be a major disappointment and suffered from a slow first hour and bad dialogue. It did feature an impressive FPS sequence, however, where audiences see through Urban’s eyes as he guns down a wave of monsters. Johnson wasn’t a fan of the end product either and took shots at it while promoting his other video game adaptation Rampage earlier in 2018.

It came as a surprise when a new Doom movie was suddenly announced in April, which is directed by Tony Giglio and stars Amy Manson (Once Upon A Time). The movie is set for release sometime in 2019, and Giglio recently responded to a fan query on Twitter asking if the Barons Of Hell will make an appearance. Sadly, he confirmed they weren’t summoned this time, but could show up in a potential sequel.

The new Doom appears to be a direct to DVD production, and while little is known about the movie’s plot, various details have been confirmed. The iconic BFG will definitely appear, while the Spiderdemon boss creature won’t. Fans have been wondering if Doomguy himself will also show up, but if he does, the production is keeping him a secret for now. Set photos also confirm the movie won’t be shying away from bloodshed, so it definitely won’t be a PG-13 affair.

Next year will be a packed year for Doom fans because, in addition to the new movie, a game dubbed Doom Eternal will also be released. The new game will take inspiration from Doom II: Hell On Earth, with the Doom Slayer coming to Earth to stop a new invasion from Hell. The game will feature lots of new gameplay features, enemies and weapons, including a brutal new arm blade that comes in useful for up-close killing.
