DOOM Eternal takes the systems established in DOOM 2016 and amps everything up to eleven. Eternal is the bigger, badder version of its predecessor.

While the campaign certainly makes its own improvements, DOOM Eternal also takes steps to create an interesting multiplayer experience, something the previous game struggled to do. This comes in the form of two different multiplayer modes.

Battle Mode and Invasion mode put unique twists on the gameplay of DOOM Eternal, in different ways. Here's everything to know about DOOM Eternal's Battle and Invasion modes.

How Battle Mode Works in DOOM Eternal

Eternal Battle Mode Doom

Battle Mode only takes three players, with one playing the Doom Slayer and the two others teaming up as demons. The objective for both teams is simple, destroy the other team. The Slayer comes fully equipped with all guns and upgrades, essentially making them a walking tank. Like in the main game, players can use glory kills and chainsaws to get loot like health and armor, and the Slayer player will be significantly more powerful than the demons ones.

The catch, of course, is that the demons can spawn enemies in the world that are controlled by AI, and they have their own unique attacks, and the ability to block loot spawns for the player temporarily. The maps in Battle Mode are unique to that mode, and their design features a wealth of twists to encourage players to keep on the move. When the first demon player dies, the Slayer player has 20 seconds to kill the other one, or the dead demon will respawn with half health. Battle mode is an intense multiplayer experience that still has the breakneck pace of the main game, and is more than just simple PvP.

Where Is Invasion Mode In DOOM Eternal?

DOOM Eternal

While Battle Mode is immediately available in DOOM Eternal, players might notice that Invasion Mode is nowhere to be found. Bethesda showed off the mode in pre-release coverage, but unfortunately, it won't be added until an update later on. Invasion works similarly to the multiplayer of Dark Souls, as it'll let players jump into the campaign of other players and hunt them down as demons.

Bethesda hasn't given a release date for Invasion Mode yet, other than saying that it's coming sometime after launch, but it will likely be sooner rather than later considering the game saw a six-month delay and Invasion was already shown and detailed before release.

DOOM Eternal is currently available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
