Recently, game designer John Romero shared a drawing from his step daughter, referring to it the "best DOOM review of all time." John Romero's storied history in the industry is the stuff of legend. A designer and programmer, Romero co-founded id Software with Adrian Carmack, John Carmack, and Tom Hall. The group made a name for itself with the creation of Commander Keen in the early 1990s, then truly hit the stratosphere following the release of the seminal Wolfenstein 3D.

Id Software struck gold once again upon releasing DOOM in 1993; it, too, became a genre-defining first-person shooter, laying the groundwork for all that would eventually follow in its Hell-traipsing footsteps. John Romero lent his talents to the design team, a mantle he later returned to during the development of 1997's DOOM 64. Given the brand's resurgence in the last five years, there's no mistaking that Romero and his id colleagues crafted something everlasting. While he'll forever receive credit for helping originate the the first-person shooter genre, no accolade can compare to that which he received from his stepdaughter.

Yesterday, John Romero shared an image of his stepdaughter Avalon's homework, where she once listed the five best things about her family. That her mother, Brenda Romero, and stepfather are game designers (or "game dziners") count as two of the family's best qualities. Avalon also expressed pride in John's work on DOOM, even going so far as to call it "a good game." According to the designer himself, this remains the "best DOOM review of all time." This certainly seems a contender for the best DOOM review to date. It's succinct, to the point, and inarguably accurate. After all, DOOM is indeed a "good game" that has since spawned several equally good sequels across multiple generations.

As noted above, the franchise resurfaced after some time away in 2016, with id Software and Bethesda Softworks releasing a soft reboot simply titled DOOM. The more modernized entry quickly became a fan favorite, its face-paced action and relentless combat encounters remaining a hallmark of the last generation. A sequel, DOOM Eternal, hit stores just last year, once more proving the adventures of the Doom Slayer reside in a league of their own. With Update 6.66 slated to arrive this fall, fans will have yet another reason to jump into what is another very good game.
