Amazon Studios has dropped a new teaser trailer for Gus Van Sant's Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot. The movie stars Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, and Jack Black in the true story of cartoonist John Callahan. Van Sant wrote the script based on Callahan's autobiography.

John Callahan was 21 years old when a drunken car crash left him a quadriplegic. After the accident, Callahan became a cartoonist for the Portland newspaper Willamette Week. Callahan's rough-hewn drawings and black humor won him a loyal following among fellow disabled people. However, some criticized Callahan for his "politically incorrect" depictions of the blunt reality of being disabled. Callahan passed away in 2010.

Gus Van Sant will now bring Callahan's life story to the screen in Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot. Amazon Studios has dropped a teaser trailer for the film, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Callahan. See the trailer above.

Joaquin Phoenix and Jonah Hill in Dont Worry He Wont Get Far On Foot

Going by this brief glimpse, Gus Van Sant doesn't shy away from the black humor that characterized John Callahan's work. In one scene, Phoenix speeds along a sidewalk in his wheelchair, hits the curb, and goes flying into the street. Later we see Callahan using his wheelchair to drag a suicidal friend off the train tracks. Other scenes show Callahan in therapy, dealing with his life-long alcoholism. John Lennon's song "Isolation" gives the clip an appropriately sad, slightly angry backdrop. The film sees Gus Van Sant returning to the biopic genre ten years after scoring his second career Oscar nomination for the Harvey Milk story Milk. Sean Penn of course scored a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in Milk. Could the Joe Callahan role punch Joaquin Phoenix's ticket to next year's Oscars? Playing an angry disabled man certainly worked for Daniel Day-Lewis in My Left Foot.

Jonah Hill, another former Oscar nominee, cuts a striking Allman Brothers figure as Callahan's friend Donnie. Rooney Mara, also set to appear as Mary Magdalene to Phoenix's Jesus in Mary Magdalene, plays Callahan's lover Annu. Jack Black looks like his usual mischievous self in a stripclub scene. The legendary Udo Kier also makes a welcome appearance. Carrie Brownstein, Mark Webber, Heather Matarazzo, and Kim Gordon also star.

Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot highlights an eclectic upcoming slate of releases for Joaquin Phoenix. The actor will also appear in the aforementioned Mary Magdalene, playing a scruffy Jesus. He also plays a hammer-wielding hitman in You Were Never Really Here. 2018 is shaping up to be the Year of Joaquin.
