Netflix debuts a new Don't Look Up trailer and first poster seeing Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence's astronomers panicking over the impending apocalypse. Oscar winner Adam McKay is writing and directing the sci-fi black comedy, for which he was previously set to reunite with Paramount Pictures following his work on The Big Short. Netflix would subsequently scoop up the rights to the project in Netflix with Jennifer Lawrence signing on to star in the film, McKay having written the role specifically for the fellow Oscar winner.

McKay would begin expanding his ensemble cast for Don't Look Up shortly thereafter as Leonardo DiCaprio officially signed on for the other lead role, having worked with the writer/director to tweak the script to his liking. Development would continue as Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Rob Morgan, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi, Cate Blanchett and Chris Evans all joined at various points to star in the film. Production on Don't Look Up would run from November 2020 to February 2021 after being delayed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the film is now gearing up for a holiday release.

The new Don't Look Up trailer gives audiences the best look yet at McKay's chaotic and darkly comedic approach to his latest satirical feature. While Lawrence and DiCaprio are certainly no strangers to the comedic genre, the trailer looks to be a welcome return for the actor to lighter material, even as the story teases the end of the world. The trailer also promises more of McKay's biting wit as seen in his recent directorial efforts, The Big Short and Vice, in Meryl Streep's uninterested President and the trailer's citing of the story as "Based on real events that haven't happened yet."

While the decision to release Don't Look Up in December lines up with awards season, Netflix likely looking to put the film up for various Oscars and Golden Globes, it also fits nicely with the theme of the film. As the trailer eloquently puts it, the dark comedy is going to be the "Be all end all event of the year," establishing itself as a nice antithesis to the general films audiences are used to seeing around the holiday season. The wait for Don't Look Up is nearly over as the film will receive a limited theatrical release on December 10 followed by hitting Netflix on December 24.
