Netflix's Don't Look Up has been set for a release this December. Known as a frequent collaborator of Will Ferrell's for numerous hit comedies like Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, and The Other Guys, Adam McKay set his sights on dramedies like The Big Short in 2015, which utilized various unconventional techniques like fourth-wall breaks to explain the financial crisis of 2008. The writer/director followed that up with another politically-conscious drama in 2018 with Vice, in which McKay used similar techniques to chronicle Dick Cheney's rise to the most powerful Vice President in American history.

As McKay's third drama as writer/director, Don't Look Up is highly anticipated as another scathing critique of current events and American politics, but the film also features an unbelievable ensemble cast to boot. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence headline the cast as two low-level astronomers who embark on a media tour to warn the world of a cataclysmic comet headed directly towards Earth, but they have trouble being taken seriously. The film also stars Meryl Streep as the President and Jonah Hill as her son and Chief of Staff. Timothée Chalamet, Cate Blanchett, Ariana Grande, and Chris Evans also star.

Now, Netflix has announced a release date for the film which is shaping up to be one of the streamer's most eagerly-awaited releases in its history. After a release in select theaters on December 10, Don't Look Up will be available to stream on Netflix the day before Christmas, December 24.

Jonah Hill in Leaked Don't Look Up Teaser

Netflix's marketing campaign for Don't Look Up has been a bit odd, to say the least. So far, the only two looks at the film came in a sizzle reel from Netflix teasing their 2021 movie slate and a teaser trailer that aired during coverage of the Tokyo Olympics. However, the trailer was not subsequently released online following its premiere on television. Now that its release date has been announced, its promotional campaign should be ramping up any day now.

Don't Look Up is releasing during one of the most competitive times of the year, but it certainly has enough going for it to be a hit at any time. Spider-Man: No Way Home is set for a theatrical release a few days prior on December 17, for which a trailer is also expected to drop any day now. Don't Look Up will also be competing with a few other major franchise films in Sherlock Holmes 3, The Matrix 4, and The King's Man, which are all set for a release two days prior. McKay's past two films were absolute critical darlings, but Netflix's vast subscriber base could give him the opportunity to reach an even wider audience than before with Don't Look Up.
