Don't Breathe 2 is finally on the way, albeit without director Fede Alvarez at the helm, and here's everything we know about it so far. While a good jump scare can be fun, especially if experienced along with the rest of a theatrical audience, there's a reason some horror fans consider them a cheap tactic. It's pretty easy to startle someone, such as by making a sudden loud noise the person in question wasn't expecting. It takes much more skill to make the viewer feel so tense that they end up literally on the edge of their seat, wondering if anyone will make it out of the film alive.

With Don't Breathe, Alvarez managed that feat, creating a scenario in which the slightest noise could lead to doom. The movie's plot is pretty simple: young thieves attempt to rob the house of an old blind man but end up getting way more than they bargained for. However, as played by Stephen Lang, the villain is so menacing and dangerous that it's quickly clear he's not locked in with the burglars — they're locked in with him.

A critical and commercial smash in 2016, Don't Breathe immediately earned talk of a sequel. For their parts, Alvarez, producer Sam Raimi, and Lang all seemed up to return. Then years went by, with nothing being announced. Eventually, with a new director onboard, Don't Breathe 2 finally entered production and was given an August 2021 release date.

Fede Alvarez first confirmed that a sequel was in development in fall 2016. At the time, Alvarez said he planned to return as director, but obviously, that ended up not being the case. Around the same time, Sam Raimi talked up Don't Breathe 2, saying Alvarez's sequel idea was the best he'd ever heard. Naturally, this just made fans more eager to see it. By late 2018, Alvarez confirmed a script had been written, and now, Sony is set to release Don't Breathe 2 in theaters on August 13, 2021. Rodo Sayagues, who co-wrote both Don't Breathe scripts with Alvarez, is taking over as director.

Don't Breathe 2 Story Details

Dylan Minnette and Jane Levy looking at something in shock in Don't Breathe

Don't Breathe 2's story, at least what's currently known of it, has earned some puzzled reactions from fans, as it appears to be casting Stephen Lang's vile Blind Man as an antihero protagonist. The Blind Man has relocated since the first movie, and taken in a young girl who had nowhere else to go, clearly being reminded of his deceased daughter. That is until a group of kidnappers, who seem to be aware of The Blind Man's past misdeeds, show up to take her and settle some kind of score with him. While turning a murderer and sexual assaulter into a hero is an odd move, there's also been suggestions recently that Don't Breathe 2 has some unexpected twists in store for audiences.

Don't Breathe 2 Trailer

The latest trailer for Don't Breathe 2 can be seen above, and while it has a lot in common with prior trailers, its red-band status allows for some new footage and makes clear that this sequel will be just as violent and harrowing as the original. Using the "Crooked Man" rhyme that has come to be mostly associated with The Conjuring 2 is an interesting choice as well.
