West Hollywood City Council Votes to Remove Trump's Walk of Fame Star

The West Hollywood City Council has voted to remove Donald Trump's star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Their resolution urges the City of Los Angeles and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove the star due to Trump's "disturbing treatment of women and other actions".

Trump's star on the Walk of Fame (located on Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue) has been vandalized multiple times since his presidential run back in 2016. This past month alone, Trump's star was destroyed by a 24-year old man with a pickaxe (who immediately turned himself over to the police). It was previously destroyed by a man with a sledgehammer in 2016 and has been vandalized with a spray-painted Nazi swastika in the past, among other things. Now the West Hollywood City Council is pushing to have the star permanently removed from the Walk of Fame altogether.

On Monday night, August 6, the council voted unanimously to remove Trump's star from the Walk of Fame. West Hollywood Mayor Pro Ten John D'Amico later released an official statement on the matter to TheWrap, saying that the West Hollywood City Council "did not pass the resolution because Donald Trump is a conservative or a Republican". He went on to describe a star on the Walk of Fame as being an "honor" that should no longer exist "when one belittles and attacks minorities, immigrants, people with disabilities or women".

Since the star is the property of Los Angeles the City and not West Hollywood, their vote does not necessarily mean that Trump's star will be removed. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Leron Gubler issued a separate statement on the matter, saying that (for the time being) there are no plans to pull either Trump's star on the Walk of Fame or any other ones, for that matter:

“Once we receive a communication from the City of West Hollywood, it will be referred to our Executive Committee for consideration at their next meeting. As of now, there are no plans to remove any stars from the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The West Hollywood City Council does not have jurisdiction over the Hollywood Walk of Fame.”

There have been similar pushes in the past to remove the stars for disgraced celebrities like Bill Cosby and Kevin Spacey, following their respective sexual misconduct and assault scandals. However, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has not yet removed any of the (currently, more than 2,600) stars on the Walk of Fame, officially in the name of historical preservation. Until further notice, it does not sound like they intend to change course when it comes to Trump's star, either.
