Donald Glover to Host & Perform on Saturday Night Live

The multi-talented Donald Glover will host Saturday Night Live and perform as his musical alter ego Childish Gambino on an episode in May.

Donald Glover in Atlanta Season 2

Atlanta star Donald Glover will finally grace the stage at 30 Rockefeller Plaza when he serves as both host and musical guest for Saturday Night Live on the May 5th edition of the venerable comedy institution.

The multitalented Glover came to prominence in the much beloved NBC sitcom Community before breaking out on his own to create and star in Atlanta, the surreal, critically hailed FX series that chronicles the life of Glover's Earnest "Earn" Marks, a man trying to navigate a complicated life in the city's hip hop scene. Glover took home Emmys for both acting and directing in the show's first season, and he'll likely need to clear shelf space for more trophies for the acclaimed second season. Glover is also embarking on his most high profile film role as well, starring in Solo: A Star Wars Story as Lando Calrissian, the part originated by Billy Dee Williams in The Empire Strikes Back.

A stop by Saturday Night Live has become something of a right of passage for stars on the rise, and it's an honor that is long overdue for Glover. During the show's April 14th episode hosted by John Mulaney, the show confirmed Glover will host and perform as Childish Gambino, his musical alter ego, on the May 5th episode.

This is something comedy fans have been waiting a long time for. From the earliest episodes of Community, it was readily apparent that Glover is a once in a generation talent; his meteoric rise both in front of and behind the camera has been pleasing but far from shocking. As well as hosting and performing, it seems likely Glover will take part in writing at least some of the skits; he writes and directs on Atlanta, and actually got his start in the same building as SNL as a writing for Tina Fey's immortal sitcom 30 Rock. Glover was also tapped to write and produce a Deadpool cartoon for FX before bowing out earlier this year.

While Atlanta has garnered him sterling reviews and a raft of awards, Solo: A Star Wars Story figures to introduce him to a much wider audience. While opinion of the Star Wars prequel has vacillated as we've seen more and more footage, everyone seems to agree Glover is perfectly cast as a young Lando, and most are expecting him to be one of the movie's highlights. But before he loses the Millennium Falcon to a certain scruffy looking nerf herder, he'll get to dazzle us all on one of comedy's biggest stages. It's about time.
