After a long and arduous wait, the ladies of Dollface are back for a second season on Hulu. Premiering on February 11, the show follows Jules (Kat Dennings, WandaVision) and her three best friends as they emerge from quarantine and prepare to resume their lives after the pandemic. While their friendship may be stronger than ever, however, their careers and romances aren't in quite the same place.

While Jules finds herself on an upward swing at work, much to her extreme surprise, Madison (Brenda Song, Station 19) is re-evaluating her options after a devastating blow at work and the pains of her previous breakup. Thankfully, she not only has her girls to rely on, but also that surreal Cat Lady (Beth Grant, Goliath) who is always ready with advice when Jules starts falling apart.

Dennings and Song spoke to Screen Rant about how their characters feel when reaching the next milestone in their lives, and how that cautious optimism is reflected in their jobs and relationships.

dollface 202 foursome

I am loving season 2 of Dollface, and the fact that your friendship has blossomed in quarantine. However, as the big 30 approaches, I know that there are some feelings of concern career wise. Can you each talk about what your aspirations or lack thereof for your characters?

Kat Dennings: Turning 30, for Jules, is not a really a big deal to her. Or maybe it is and she's downplaying it as usual.

I mean, in my real life, turning 30 I didn't feel like a big issue. It's only gotten better and better for me. But for Jules, I really hope that she can sort of get in front of her issues, instead of just constantly being surprised by everything in life and reacting. That would be nice, but she might need a little therapy before that happens. But we all do.

Brenda, Madison knows what she wants, but maybe it's further than expected. How is she feeling right now?

Brenda Song: I think, coming out of the pandemic, Madison is really excited. At the end of season 1, she had that big break up, but I think she's really excited. Then instead of getting promoted like she thought, she gets fired.

For the first time ever, I think, Madison is in a really uncomfortable and vulnerable place. She has no idea what to do, because she's always put a lot of her self-worth behind her job and her success. I think her she put a lot of her energy into turning 30, because she had so many goals and milestones of where she thought she'd be when she was 30. And the fact that she's not there is a identity crisis for her on top of everything else.

I think this whole season is just about her rediscovering who she is and where she wants to go. Finding self-love self-confidence again, which is something that - at least for me - I definitely went through in my 20s about to turn 30.

Jules and Madison look on from Dollface

Jules and Wes ended on a not-great note, but he's still around this season. What can you say about him and any possible romance in Jules' future?

Kat Dennings: The Wes thing is actually really interesting this season. He is still in the picture, but they're really not connecting. This is played out in a lot of really fun scenes. Jules really likes him and she wants to keep this going, but he keeps kind of putting her off and canceling last minute and things like that. It's dealt with in a really real way, I think.

Jules also meets a really cute new boy named Fender, played by the lovely and wonderful Luke Cook, who's a genius. Suddenly, she has two men interested in her and they're both great, and she does not know what to do. As usual.

In a very Jules way, this all kind of explodes. So, that's a really fun element of the season.

Another fun element is all the different dream scenarios or homages that Dollface does. What aspect of that are you each looking forward to this season, and is there any take you would like to do in the future that you haven't yet.

Brenda Song: I think the anxiety tornado was one that I think hit close to home for all of us, because when haven't we spiraled like that? When we were shooting that, I was like, "I feel like this is something that I've been through, for sure."

And I think that's what's so fun about all that magical surrealism stuff: just taking these  crazy moments and amplifying them in a fun way, and being able to deal with them in a fun way. We always say that's where Jules has her freak outs.

Kat Dennings: Yeah, Jules lives out her disaster scenario in Cat Lady Land.

But the fun of this season 2 is that all the girls come into this element. It's really cool, especially if you love season 1. It's so exciting to see Stella and Izzy and Madison in this world with her. Instead of it just being Jules living out her anxiety, it's now all the girls living out their anxieties.

And the scene that Brenda is talking about is Esther spiraling out because of her boyfriend. She thinks he's canceling on her or something, she's getting more and more worked up, and then literally we're in a van storm chaser style in a tornado. And it is amazing. Instead of it just being Jules living her thing, all the girls get to bring their stories into the surreal part of the show. So, that's really fun.
