V Rising is a Steam exclusive and is certainly made for keyboard use, but whether or not it supports controllers is a whole other question. While it's still in early access, V Rising exploded in popularity after release day for its Valheim and Diablo similarities, but without controller support, it may not have quite the plop-on-the-couch quality that some look for in a game of its type.

Stunlock Studios launched V Rising in Steam's early access program on May 17, 2022; currently, there have been no announcements for when it will be available elsewhere. The game is set in an open world teeming with vampires and all other sorts of other monsters. Where it gets its Diablo comparison is with the top-down, point-and-click formula that is a staple of the series. However, other areas such as V Rising's unique vampire abilities separate it from others that share some of its gameplay mechanics. Another question, in particular, regarding the game's controller support, has begum circulating throughout the community, and V Rising took to social media to answer it.

In a Twitter response the developer said, "we aren't currently working on controller support and don't have any plans to do so. It isn't impossible, but I wouldn't expect it." That statement alone indicates that currently, and for the foreseeable future (possibly forever) - there isn't controller support for V Rising. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean a controller doesn't work in the game at all.

V Rising Controller Support Is A Challenge & Unlikely To Happen

V Rising Dungeon Battle Special Ability

With the sheer amount of hotkeys needed to play V Rising, controller support is almost certainly unlikely to happen. The keyboard is the best option for games that utilize MMORPG-type functions because it's less limited to the number of buttons that can be pressed at any given time. V Rising fits into this mold and has many abilities tied to specific hotkeys, which means it makes more sense to use a mouse and keyboard to play. Valheim does some things better than V Rising and even offers controller support, but V Rising is making a special name for itself with the unique qualities it's bringing to the genre.

Although the game doesn't offer controller support, one can technically still be used when plugged into the PC and mapped accordingly. However, because some functions use the same input keys, no controller works well with the setup, and players won't have as much fun constantly trying to figure out what button to press, or, how to bypass a key that does require the same input. However, as the Twitter response mentioned though, it's not impossible to add controller support in the future - it's just highly unlikely at this point. If Stunlock Studios leaves the game's controls as-is, hopefully, it doesn't become V Rising's worst decision. Those who plan on playing the game should go ahead and get used to playing on a mouse and keyboard, at least for this title, and wait to see if more happens throughout the game's early access period.
