Superman is often considered one of the most powerful superheroes in DC Comics, but does he actually need to eat like an ordinary human? Given that Superman's abilities make him stronger and more durable then the average human, it begs the question as to whether or not hunger can harm the Man of Steel in any capacity, or if his lifespan solely hinges on exposure to a yellow sun.

This question was partially answered in Action Comics #454, titled "Superman's Energy Crisis," which showcased a new vulnerable side of Superman. The issue starts with Superman (in his Clark Kent disguise) on the late night news reporting that Toyman, one of Superman's more bizarre foes, managed to defeat the Man of Steel after successfully committing a robbery earlier that day. The broadcast cuts to commercial, but when it resumes Clark Kent is asleep live on television. When encountered with a tree struck by lightning, Superman does his best to protect the nearby civilians, but finds that this event has worn him out completely. The only way for Superman to completely recover his energy, is by eating fast food hamburgers.

Superman walks into a nearby "MacTavish" hamburger restaurant, and consumes an order of burgers so quickly one patron estimates the Man of Steel is "eating at least 60 hamburgers a minute." Stranger still, this seemingly restores Superman's strength, causing him to conclude the large amount of calories seems to be the only way to restore the energy lost using his powers.

The issue later reveals something is taking away solar energy from Superman, and his powers return to normal. But even if the story doesn't definitively answer whether or not Superman needs to eat, it suggests that at the very least, without the yellow sun and solar energy, he is affected by hunger as much as any human. But once his superpowers return in full, Superman seemingly didn't need to eat food at all, as if his ordeal had never happened. Superman's powers may in fact make eating completely unnecessary for the hero, so long as he gets a regular dose of sunlight. Given that the Sun is not in any danger of going out in the near future, under normal circumstances, Superman wouldn't be in danger of losing his powers, and thus not have to eat to fuel his powers instead. In fact, Action Comics #1000 suggest Superman may actually be immortal as a result of his powers, meaning he could go on living forever without eating a single meal.

However, just because Superman may not need to eat food does not mean that he would never eat at all. Superman has been a vegetarian in the past, which means that, at the very least, he does eat earth food on a regular basis. Perhaps Clark Kent might just enjoy eating food because of how it tastes, or because it makes him feel more human than alien, regardless as to whether or not he actually needs to eat. When Superman does need to eat though, "MacTavish" restaurants will make a nice payday, as Superman can eat a lot of burgers in a short amount of time.
