The Scream franchise isn’t known for having any post-credits scenes, but does that change with Scream 6? The sixth installment in the horror film series leaves Woodsboro behind for New York City. Set a year after the events of 2022’s Scream (aka, Scream 5), Samantha (Melissa Barrera) and Tara Carpenter (Wednesday’s Jenna Ortega) have moved away from Woodsboro to settle in the Big Apple where Tara now attends university.

The Scream films have become embedded in pop culture. The first film became a classic and with every installment the franchise managed to update its commentary — be it on horror movie tropes, franchises, or other self-aware teasing — to suit the time of its release. Scream 6 is no different. While it’s the first film not to feature Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell decided not to return for pay reasons), it is a continuation of Sam and Tara’s story following Scream 2022. Scream 6 has its fair share of surprises, violent kills, and suspects, but it also includes a special treat for patient viewers.

Scream 6 Does Have A Post-Credits Scene

Scream 6 includes a post-credits scene, and it’s worth the wait. The post-credits scene aligns with the horror film’s self-awareness and meta commentary and will likely have audiences chuckling because of what it has to say. Scream 6’s post-credits scene is certainly a memorable one — not just within the film itself, but it ranks high on the list of post-credits scenes that have become the norm these days. The post-credits scene manages to subvert expectations in terms of how it plays out, and makes for the perfect end to Scream 6. What’s more, shortly after the screen initially goes black, there’s a brief moment that will remind viewers why this franchise continues to be so fun.

Scream 6's Post-Credits Scene Is A Franchise First

After six movies, plenty of deaths, and Ghostface killers, Scream 6 marks the first time a post-credits scene has been utilized since the franchise began. Post-credits scenes weren’t employed very much when the first Scream was released in theaters in 1996, and the rest of the sequels followed suit by not including one. It became a tradition not to include one, so why add one in now after so long? It’s possible Scream 6 has a post-credits scene because the audience now expects there to be one. Many major blockbusters, including those in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, include an after credits scene.

Scream 6 has officially joined the throng, but did so on its own terms. It could also be that Scream 6 is the start of a new era for the franchise, and every sequel will now have a post-credits scene moving forward. With a new central cast leading the Scream franchise, aptly called the Core Four, it’s only natural for the Scream franchise to update certain elements while maintaining the ones that have kept this franchise going for so long. It’s also possible Scream 6 will be the first and only time a post-credits scene will be included in the horror franchise. Either way, Scream 6’s post-credits scene is more than a throwaway addition.
