Warning: SPOILERS for Minions: The Rise of Gru Below!

Does Minions: The Rise of Gru have an after-credits scene? As the newest movie in the Despicable Me franchise, The Rise of Gru is a sequel to the first Minions, itself a prequel to the Despicable Me movies and focusing in on the young Gru, voiced again by Steve Carrell. As a would-be supervillain, Gru's origins are decidedly more wacky and comedic in the zany template of the Despicable Me franchise.

In The Rise of Gru, the young Gru receives an invitation to join a villainous organization known as the Vicious 6. Gru and the Vicious 6 end up in a battle over a powerful ancient relic. Though Gru and his minion friends emerge triumphant by the movie's end, there is a bit more to the story.

The Rise of Gru has one end-credits scene, shown very early in the credits with the Despicable Me series star Gru and his minions arrive at the shop of Dr. Nefario (Russell Brand), extending an offer for him to join them. Nefario at first turns down the offer, but after some pleading by Gru and the minions, he agrees to join. The film then concludes with Gru, Nefario, and the minions taking off into the sky in a large ship.

The after-credits scene of The Rise of Gru gives more weight to its title, with Gru later piloting his own ship in the Despicable Me movies. Aside from that, the scene and the movie as a whole keep up the contrarian nature of the Despicable Me and Minions movies. Despite being villain-centered, The Rise of Gru keeps a cartoony tone at all times.

The Rise of Gru has fun as an origin story for Gru as Despicable Me's anchor, including for the upcoming Despicable Me 4. The movie also brings in quite an ensemble voice cast, too, with Carrell and Brand breaking out plenty of laughs alongside stars like Michelle Yeoh, Taraji B. Henson, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, RZA, Lucy Lawless, and several others. For families going into theaters to see Minions: The Rise of Gru this weekend, one piece of advice to bear in mind is that the movie does indeed have a fun after-credits scene. While not necessarily teasing anything immediate in the Despicable Me series, it is nonetheless something to stick around for.
