Doctor Who is one of the longest-running science fiction shows of all time. Since 1963, Doctor Who has terrified children, shown us a countless number of alien planets, and showed us different sides of famous historical characters, such as Vincent van Gogh and Rosa Parks. One of the central elements of the show is how the titular Doctor changes his appearance and personality when he has been severely injured. This process, called regeneration, allows the show to change its lead actor every few years, allowing the show to refresh itself constantly. That being said, with each Doctor comes a new personality, leading to each incarnation being slightly different from the last.

With this character change in mind, this article will sort each incarnation of the Doctor into their respective Hogwarts Houses (Ruth Doctor not included as we haven't seen much of the character).

First Doctor: Ravenclaw

First Doctor

The First Doctor, played by William Hartnell, helped kickstart the franchise into the Goliath that it is today. It is only through the incredible stewardship and performance of the British actor that the show is still running, with his exit from the show leading showrunners to invent regeneration to explain the change in lead actor.

While the First Doctor, as do many incarnations of the Doctor, share the traits of all four Hogwarts Houses, Ravenclaw seems like the best fit for the first incarnation. This incarnation, perhaps more than others, was a man of learning and this almost certainly came from the fact that the show was intended to educate children.

Second Doctor: Slytherin

While some may remember the Second Doctor as being slightly bumbling and odd, you should also remember that the Second Doctor exaggerated these sides of his personality so that his enemies would underestimate him, giving the Doctor an edge in negotiations.

The Second Doctor was incredibly cunning and a master manipulator, so it seems natural that he should be sorted into Slytherin House.

Third Doctor: Gryffindor

The Third Doctor is the most 'action hero' incarnation of the Doctor. This incarnation always insisted on storming into a situation, grabbing the problem by its coattails and defeating it head-on. It is this personality trait that makes the Third Doctor a Gryffindor.

The action-orientated take on the character means that the Third Doctor got more chances to do 'brave' things, such as physically fighting with enemies and even taking part in a sword fight.

Fourth Doctor: Gryffindor

The Fourth Doctor is one of the most loved incarnations of the Doctor, with Tom Baker playing the titular Time Lord for 7 years in the process. Due to the weird and wonderful personality of the Fourth Doctor, it is incredibly difficult to actually place him in a particular house.

However, Gryffindor seems like the natural fit for the Fourth Incarnation of the Doctor. Much like the Third Doctor, he was brave, but in a more eccentric manner than his prior incarnation.

Fifth Doctor: Slytherin

While the Fifth incarnation of the Doctor may appear to be a quirky character due to his eccentric costume complete with stick of celery, he is actually one of the most violent and ruthless incarnations of the Doctor that we've seen so far.

The Fifth Doctor famously killed the Sea Devils and the Silurians by pumping Hexachromite gas through their ventilation system and he also suffocated a Cyberman with gold. Slytherin is clearly the place for the Fifth Doctor due to this straightforward, pragmatic approach to fighting enemies.

Sixth Doctor: Gryffindor

While the initial appearance of the Sixth Doctor may lead casual fans of Harry Potter movies to place him Slytherin, his later appearances across the wider Doctor Who canon show that he is far better suited to Gryffindor House.

Much like the Third Doctor, though without the action-oriented character, the Sixth Doctor would storm into a situation without much consideration, confident that he could solve the problem.

Seventh Doctor: Slytherin

Seventh Doctor

Much like the Second Doctor, the Seventh Doctor presents himself as a foolish character throughout several episodes, making him appear like he isn't particularly cunning, or useful at all. However, particularly in the episode Remembrance of the Daleks, this was shown to be not true.

The Seventh Doctor is incredibly cunning and can easily manipulate those around him into falling in line with the Doctor's own ends.

Eighth Doctor: Gryffindor

Perhaps this is unfair due to the fact that the only main time we saw the Eighth Doctor was in a TV movie that was created in order to launch Doctor Who in the United States. It was because of this that the showrunners felt the need to have the Eighth Doctor be more like a dashing hero.

Everything about the Eighth Doctor screams Gryffindor, he is a brave, confident, and charming hero who is more than willing to risk his own life to achieve the best outcome.

War Doctor: Gryffindor

The War Doctor may be one of the most difficult to place due to the little information we actually have on the character, aside from the fact that he fought in the Time War.

However, based on the fact that he fought in a war and this requires great bravery, placing the War Doctor in Gryffindor seems natural (though the case could also be made for Slytherin).

Ninth Doctor: Gryffindor

The Ninth Doctor was one of the most difficult ones to place, not only because he was a character that was clearly transitioning from the emotional impact of the Time War, but also because he only received a short amount of time in the TARDIS.

That being said, Gryffindor seems like the natural place for the character for the same reasons as the Third and Sixth incarnations, he was more than willing to fight with enemies and was also very self-confident.

Tenth Doctor: Hufflepuff

The Tenth Doctor is one of the most difficult Doctors to place on this list. While David Tennant's much-loved portrayal of the Doctor showed obvious signs of the bravery we associate with Gryffindors, as well as the ambition that we see in Slytherins. Hufflepuff seems like a natural place for the character.

Aside from his obvious flirtations with the dark side during his 'Time Lord Victorious' rants, he was a character who was deeply driven by his connections with other people and will ultimately be remembered for his dedication to Rose and his clear moral code.

Eleventh Doctor: Ravenclaw

While the Eleventh Doctor may appear to be a Hufflepuff due to his childish nature and dedication to his companions, a closer look into the character reveals that he is far closer to the traits of a Ravenclaw than a Hufflepuff.

Throughout the Eleventh Doctor's run in the TARDIS, the Doctor frequently mentions his own cleverness, with companions such as River Song and Amy Pond mentioning that he likes impressing them with his cleverness.

Twelfth Doctor: Hufflepuff

If there's one quote from the Twelfth Doctor's time in the TARDIS that sums up his character perfectly, it is 'be kind'. It is this one quote that helps us understand the Twelfth Doctor's character and also allows us to easily place him into Hufflepuff House.

The Twelfth Doctor may be the most clear-cut example of a Hufflepuff from all the Doctors on this list, with the character exhibiting all of the Hufflepuff House traits.

Thirteenth Doctor: Hufflepuff

Jodie Whittaker as Thirteenth Doctor in Doctor Who

The Thirteenth Doctor is most known for her wide-eyed, excited view on the universe and wants to visit these faraway places with her Fam - Ryan, Yaz, and Graham.

Due to these traits, it seems like Hufflepuff is the house for Thirteen, though perhaps more time will tell whether or not she should be in a different house.
