Loki star Sophia Di Martino is open to playing either the Doctor or the Master in Doctor Who. The BBC's Doctor Who is the longest-running sci-fi TV series globally, and for many viewers, it has come to define time travel sci-fi. Given that's the case, Loki was always going to be compared to this iconic show.

The comparisons aren't without basis. Loki's TVA is what the Time Lords were supposed to be, a bureaucratic organization possessing wondrous powers but no sense of wonder. The third episode, in particular, felt like a riff on Doctor Who, shot in a quarry through a colored lens, while the plot seemed lifted straight from a story in the Peter Capaldi era. And, of course, the idea of different versions of the same person colliding feels like your standard multi-Doctor story. Even the dynamic between Tom Hiddleston's Loki and Sophia Di Martino's Sylvia feels very much reminiscent of the rivalry between the Doctor and Renegade Time Lord, the Master. However, it's anybody's guess which one is the hero and which is the villain. Given all the similarities, it was only a matter of time before Sophia Di Martino was asked whether she'd be interested in taking over Doctor Who, as current star Jodie Whittaker is reportedly leaving after Doctor Who season 13.

Speaking to the Radio Times, Di Martino admitted she could understand the comparisons between Loki and Doctor Who. "I see what they mean [about the episode]," she observed, "the duo, as well. We’re each other’s companion!" She considered the possibility of playing either the Doctor or the Master, seeming quite optimistic about the idea. "I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it," Di Martino concluded. "But I haven’t really given it much thought, to be honest. I haven’t read any of that stuff."

Lady Loki Subtlest Easter Egg Sets Up Lady Loki For A Fail

Loki antihero Sylvie - a composite of two comic book characters, Lady Loki and Enchantress - is Di Martino's highest-profile character to date. But she's already demonstrated the range needed by any actor who plays the Doctor or the Master, moving from open and reflective to brutal and dangerous at remarkable speed. Some of her scenes with Tom Hiddleston have been absolutely magical, such as the moment where Hiddleston's Loki snarled he'd concealed a stolen TemPad within his heart. "Well, then, I'll cut it out," Sylvie hissed with such intensity even Loki probably wondered if she'd try. Meanwhile, another unexpected highlight of episode 3 saw Sylvie and Loki discuss love and loss, a surprising heart-to-heart that worked because of the strength of the two actors.

Assuming reports are accurate that Whittaker is leaving Doctor Who - either after season 13 or, according to another rumor, after a couple of Doctor Who specials in 2022 - the BBC has probably already decided on her replacement. Di Martino doesn't sound at all familiar with reports of Whittaker's departure, which likely means she hasn't been involved in any discussions about the part. Hopefully, Doctor Who will consider her in the future, though - should the Multiverse survive Loki.
