[This article contains possible spoilers for Doctor Who season 9.]
Doctor Who returns in just two weeks, and fans can expect an "epic sweep to this season," according to star Peter Capaldi. Great new villains, brilliant old ones, and some very scary creatures are on tap for season 9, as well as some exciting guest stars. Alex Kingston is set to reprise her role as River Song for this year's Christmas Special, appearing alongside the Twelfth Doctor for the very first time. And Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will also guest star, as a reportedly new character.
But putting the rest of season 9 aside, the first episode back, titled 'The Magician's Apprentice,' will show a curiously different side to the Doctor that we haven't really seen before. Capaldi recently revealed that in the two-part premiere, the Time Lord is "about to make a mistake that has cataclysmic repercussions," and he's "running from something, that even he does not yet understand." And indeed, it seems the Doctor is missing in the first episode trailer above.
It's hard to say what could be wrong with the Doctor, but it might have something to do with the return of Michelle Gomez as Missy in the season opener. Missy, a.k.a. the latest incarnation of the Doctor’s arch-nemesis, The Master, appears in the trailer, showing companion Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) a confession dial, the last will and testament of the Doctor.
This new confession, coupled with the premiere synopsis below, indicates troubling times are ahead:
"Where is the Doctor? When the skies of Earth are frozen by a mysterious alien force, Clara needs her friend. But where is the Doctor, and what is he hiding from? As past deeds come back to haunt him, old enemies will come face-to-face, and for the Doctor and Clara survival seems impossible."
But most importantly, the new trailer seems to give credence to the rumor that in the first episode the Doctor will come face-to-face with a young Davros, who later created the Doctor's deadliest enemy, the Daleks. Supposedly, the Doctor will tackle his greatest test yet, as he must decide whether to kill this child and potentially alter the timeline, in order to save millions of lives. When the Mirror first reported the rumor earlier this year, it was met with speculation, but now these clues seem to offer more evidence to back that claim.
Capaldi recently mentioned that the Doctor will be in a “conflict central to his being,” and these rumors certainly fit that bill. It is also possible that the hand-eye creatures are part of the humanoid Kaled empire, before they mutated into the present-day Daleks. The clincher, however, is when Clara asks the Doctor at the end, "What have you done?" Well, we don't have much longer to wait and find out.
Doctor Who season 9 premieres September 19th, 2015 on BBC America.
