The first look of Jacob Anderson in the upcoming Doctor Who season 13 was just released. Doctor Who holds the Guinness world record for the longest-running sci-fi television series to date, originally running from 1963-1989 and coming back after a hiatus in 2005. The British series is notable for its ever-growing roster of lead actors who have played the titular role, enabled by the character’s ability of regeneration to transform into a new person when facing death. The current incarnation of The Doctor is portrayed by the first woman to embody the popular Time Lord, Jodie Whitaker, who took over the reins from Peter Capaldi in 2017.

The classic BBC series follows a humanoid alien, known as “The Doctor,” who explores the universe in a time-traveling ship alongside their companion to defeat the evils of the universe and help those in need. Due to the series’ whimsical time-bending nature, it has been an episodic series since its original run, with The Doctor and their human companion encountering, battling, and solving a mystery within one contained episode. However, due to the pandemic shutdowns, the series was limited to doing something new in season 13 by telling one overarching story throughout the season. Along with other revelations from the previous season, this singular story will also introduce some new characters, including a new additional companion portrayed by John Bishop

Another new character in Doctor Who season 13 is Vinder, portrayed by Game of Thrones’ Anderson, who was just featured in a new first-look photo. Anderson responded on Twitter saying that filming Doctor Who was potentially the most fun he has ever had. Anderson is most known for portraying Grey Worm in the hit TV series Game of Thrones, and for his music which he releases under the stage name of Raleigh Ritchie. Check out the photo below:

When the series left off, The Doctor’s world was rocked by the revelation that The Doctor was the Timeless Child, a divisive part of Gallifrey’s history and the origin of the Time Lords’ regenerative powers. The Timeless Child’s ability to regenerate was written into the genetic code of the Time Lords, creating the entire nearly-immortal race The Doctor comes from. This revelation is likely to disrupt the harmonious balance of the Doctor’s life, and certainly disrupts everything audiences thought they knew about the origin of the Doctor. However, where Vinder’s role will be in all of this is remains a tight-lipped mystery.

This series of Doctor Who will be the first screen appearance from Anderson since the end of Game of Thrones in 2019. Although, it certainly won’t be the last; Anderson is set to co-star in Alice Lowe’s newest rom-com Timestalker, which is currently in pre-production. The ending of Game of Thrones was highly divisive among fans, but it is reassuring to know that Anderson was able to jump aboard another popular series so soon. Doctor Who’s season 13 will premiere in late 2021.
