Doctor Who has cast John Bishop as a new companion for season 13. The latest adventure for Jodie Whittaker's 13th Doctor is the New Year's Day special, "Revolution of the Daleks", and it finds The Doctor still a prisoner within the Judoon's high-security jail. Meanwhile, her companions Yaz (Mandip Gill), Ryan (Tosin Cole), and Graham (Bradley Walsh) receive help from the recently returned Captain Jack (John Barrowman) as they battle against the Daleks invading Earth (again).

"Revolution of the Daleks" is also the final episode for Cole's Ryan and Walsh's Graham. Along with Gill's Yaz, all three have been the 13th Doctor's companions (or mates, rather) since Whittaker made her debut in the Doctor Who season 11 premiere, "The Woman Who Fell to Earth". Since then, the group have weathered many adventures, with Ryan and Graham's relationship receiving a good amount of screen time as the two grew closer in the wake of Grace's death. Now, though, their time traveling in the TARDIS has come to an end, but Yaz won't be left alone in her travels with The Doctor.

As revealed at the very end of "Revolution of the Daleks", the new companion joining Doctor Who for season 13 is being played by actor John Bishop. The scene introducing Bishop sees him loading items into a truck while another man reads to him his horoscope for the new year, noting it includes surprises, the color blue, and the number 13. Obviously, this horoscope predicts his upcoming adventures with The Doctor and the short scene teases what's to come with a quick montage showing Bishop in various predicaments. Check out the Bishop's Doctor Who debut, below:

Bishop's character is named Dan and like so many companions before him, Doctor Who season 13 will find him "embroiled in the Doctor's adventures" and staring down "evil alien races beyond his wildest nightmares". Just how he comes to cross paths with The Doctor and Yaz remains to be seen, but Bishop has been filming since last year, so odds are good he'll show up in the season 13 premiere. The 54-year-old Bishop is a stand-up comedian and actor who has appeared in Skins and more recently Fearless.

Changing companions is just as much a part of Doctor Who as changing Doctors, and with the addition of a new companion, there's typically some fun interactions as the newcomer gets to know their Doctor. Mixing a new companion with an old companion is equally fun, and for Yaz, it'll be interesting to see how she adjusts to a new companion having just said goodbye to her other two traveling mates. Given she's just been on an adventure with Captain Jack and knows The Doctor has had many companions before, Yaz likely won't be too shocked when they pick up another one. Then again, she may have expected it to be just the Doc and her for at least a little while. However it happens, the arrival of Bishop's Dan is sure shake up the dynamic within the TARDIS.
