For Doctor Who fans, there has perhaps never been a time with more speculation, which the BBC have just added to with a social media post that teases the return of Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor to the series. With Jodie Whittaker’s time in the TARDIS coming to an end, the reins of the longest running sci-fi show in TV history are being passed from current show-runner Chris Chibnall to returning hero Russel T Davies, who oversaw the show’s revival in 2005. Davies’ re-appointment has been met with rapturous praise from fans and a gamut of announcements about the return of previous cast members, along with the introduction of new ones.

Perhaps the most important announcement has been the casting of Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa as the fourteenth Doctor, along with the news that both David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be reprising their roles of the tenth Doctor and Donna Noble for the 60th anniversary special next year. Alongside these, Russel recently announced that Yasmin Finney, star of Netflix drama Heartstopper would be joining the cast as Rose. This would be the second character named Rose to appear in the revived show, but Russel didn’t give any indication as to how Finney’s character relates to the one played by Billie Piper in Davies’ own first two seasons.

It was under the announcement of Finney’s casting on Instagram that the teaser about Smith’s return was posted, with a comment from the BBCDoctorWho page which read “silence will fall,” a reference to ‘The Silence’, a main antagonist of Smith’s era. Under that comment, users excitedly began to speculate about a reappearance of the Eleventh Doctor. Check out the interaction shared by Twitter account MATT SMITH NEWS PAGE below:

While this is an exciting tease of things to come, there has been no official announcement by any party about Smith’s return to the show. It may just be that Davies and the BBC are sharing in a clever joke about the show runner's tendency to drop little teases, and the BBC are simply using a reference to ask him to stop. However, Smith has said that he is open to a return and the already-announced reappearance of Tennant and Tate for the anniversary episode means that it is likely we could be seeing a multi-doctor adventure that Doctor Who is so famous for doing.

All in all, the return of Davies, Tennant and Tate couldn’t be more hyped up and the little hints that he keeps dropping are doing nothing to slow the rumor mill about further reunions. However, it's not only the return of fan favorites from the past that should be causing excitement, as Gatwa and Finney are both equally exciting additions to the cast. The future of Doctor Who is therefore not only bright because there’s a classic anniversary special on the way, but also because the new era of the show is looking like it could reach the heights of Davies’ own triumphant early seasons.
