If there was one thing the fans have learned from Doctor Who, it's that the bond between the Time Lord and their companions is the most important element of the show. Without trust and chemistry, there's no chance that the friendship would progress. Luckily, the partnerships we have seen all have fascinating dynamics that work really well.

However, this is not to say these friendships are as strong as we are led to believe. Even the most iconic ones had their weaknesses that could make you reconsider if they are as close as they portray. An example — Amy and Eleven. Keep reading to discover 10 ways these two cannot be considered real friends.

He Kept Important Decisions From Her

A solid reason why these two aren't friends is that Eleven doesn't trust Amy completely. Remember when he traumatized her by letting her witness his execution only to find out that he faked it? Or when he allowed her to believe she had been safely traveling with him in the TARDIS when she was at Demon's Run?

If Eleven and Amy were as close as they led fans to believe then surely he would have entrusted her enough with his secrets. Instead, he put her through unnecessary trauma and grief...

She Made Impulsive Decisions Without Him

The friendship between Eleven and Amy was also proven not to be very strong whenever she made impulsive decisions without him. While Amy took on a maternalistic-like role with Eleven, sometimes she took it too far and didn't think about the consequences.

This was first seen in "The Beast Below" when she tried to get him off the planet before he discovered the truth about the Star Whale. It was also seen in "The Impossible Astronaut" when she tried to kill the astronaut to prevent his death. It's no wonder he had trust issues...

He Kept Her Waiting 50 years

Another reason that proves Amy and Eleven weren't true friends was the fact that he was unreliable. If there is one thing you would expect from your friends, it's that they are supportive and reliable. This was something that was missing from Amy and Eleven's relationship as he failed to turn up for her.

Not only did he make her wait 14 years, but he also made her wait for an extra 36 when he failed to rescue her. Add to the fact that he disappears and reappears whenever he likes, and Amy wouldn't even be able to rely on him to get her milk from the shops.

A Maternalistic Role

Amy and Eleven couldn't be considered friends when their bond was more of a parent and child than anything else. The reason why Eleven and Amy's dynamic worked was because they were opposites. Where Eleven was childish, Amy was mature. Where he was impatient, she was a calming presence.

Amy ensured that Eleven didn't lose focus on his goals and picked him up when he fell into a dark abyss. She even told River to look after him once she was gone. Amy officially embraced the motherly role, which is different than that of a friend.

He Was Responsible For Losing Melody

One of the hardest obstacles Amy and Eleven would have to overcome was the fact that he was responsible for Melody going missing. Some may be afraid to say it, but Eleven was partially at fault for River being taken by the Church. For one, if Amy hadn't been traveling with him then she and her baby wouldn't have been a target.

Also, some part of her is seen to blame the Doctor when she shrugs off his attempts to comfort her. Although it looks as if they were on solid ground, the fact that Amy "kills" Kovarian suggests there may be some leftover resentment for Eleven too.

The Drop-In Appointments

Another factor that shows that Amy and Eleven aren't real friends is how the Time Lord disrupts her life. Amy once complained to Eleven that she felt like she couldn't move on with her life because he would turn up unexpectedly and sweep her away in the TARDIS. Sometimes it was for a couple of days but other times, it was for a couple of months.

It was a little selfish of Eleven to disrupt Amy's life and expect her to drop everything because he missed her. He seemed to put his own needs ahead of hers. A good friend would never do this.

They Don't Know Anything About Each Other's Lives

Can Amy and Eleven be considered friends if they don't know anything about each other's personal lives? Other than appearing at her wedding, the Doctor never really tried to get to know her family. Same went for Amy; she didn't know anything about his background and didn't exactly press him for information on his family.

If Eleven and Amy were best friends then surely they would know the basic facts about one another. It makes one think there isn't a strong level of trust.

He Abandoned Her In Her Time Of Need

It also seems like Eleven wasn't there for Amy in her time of need. With all of space and time to explore, it's not surprising that the Doctor was fairly absent. He only seemed to come to Amy's aid if she was in imminent danger or at risk of an alien threat.

What he didn't do was support her through some difficult times. For instance, he wasn't there for her when she split from Rory nor was he there for her when she found out she was infertile. She needed her "best friend" and he failed to turn up.

She Put Him On A Pedestal

Another reason that proved Amy and Eleven weren't real friends was the fact that she put him on a pedestal. Everyone knows that Amy completely adored the Doctor. She believed he was one of a kind and could do no wrong. However, when he failed to meet her expectations, she could be quite mean.

For instance, in "Amy's Choice," she spitefully lashed out at him when he said he didn't know how to save Rory. Although he can achieve the impossible, he's not God. He hasn't got that power, so it's not fair to be disappointed every time he doesn't live up to her expectations. It's not what a true friend would do.

He Put Her In Danger

One of the biggest reasons that prove Eleven and Amy weren't real friends was the fact that he put her life in danger. As fans know, Eleven had a penchant for trouble. However, just because he was an adrenaline junkie didn't mean Amy felt the same — especially when she had more to lose as time went on.

In fact, Amy lost her life because Eleven didn't think about the repercussions of his actions. A true friend would never put someone they cared about in this position.
