On Doctor Who, fans have seen many companions come and go. However, only a certain few have managed to hold a special place in the Time Lord's heart. One of these people was Clara Oswald - the Impossible Girl who managed to save the Doctor in every way imaginable.

It was just a shame that some fans weren't as passionate about her as the time traveler was. While Jenna Coleman is a fantastic actress, some people believe Clara's character development got worse as time went on. Don't believe it? From her arrogance to her death wish, here are ten reasons why she became unrecognizable near the end.

She Believed She Was Invincible

One aspect of Clara's personality that got worse over time was her recklessness. As many fans know, Clara had an unwavering loyalty to the Doctor. However, over time, Clara became so blinded by her faith in the Doctor that she began to place the Time Lord on a pedestal.

Since she believed the Doctor would fix everything, Clara became more reckless and arrogant - especially in season 9. She began to place herself on the frontlines more and had no qualms in offering her life for others. Ultimately, this attitude was the reason for her death.

She Became A Lot More Selfish

Fans also bore witness to Clara becoming more selfish as time went on. As the seasons progressed, fans saw Clara begin to take advantage of her friendship with the Doctor. At first, it was the little things - such as taking children she was looking after on trips across the universe to help them "learn".

However, her requests started to become bolder and selfish. This was most particularly seen in "Dark Water" when she betrayed the Time Lord's trust and blackmailed Twelve into saving Danny's life. Fans lost a lot of respect for her at this moment.

She Began To Defy The Doctor

When Clara first joined Eleven, she was one of the only time-traveling companions who didn't defy the Time Lord's instructions. When Eleven requested that she wait until further instructions, he was surprised that she didn't argue back ("Cold War").

However, added to her arrogance and recklessness, she grew defiant as time progressed. An example of this was when Twelve ordered her to leave and she stubbornly refused to because he was in danger ("Under the Lake/Before the Flood"). As a result of her defiance, she sometimes became a burden on missions.

Rejecting Twelve

Another moment fans didn't enjoy was Clara's initial rejection of Twelve. As many fans know, Clara and Eleven shared a brief flirtation. There was a possibility of another Rose/Ten situation since Clara admitted she had feelings for the Time Lord ("The Time of The Doctor").

However, once Eleven regenerated, Clara almost abandoned the Doctor because she didn't like the person he had become. In fact, Twelve recognizes their relationship wouldn't be the same because she wouldn't let go of the past. It frustrated fans that she allowed this shallowness to get in the way of their partnership.

Her Mean Streak

When fans were first introduced to Clara, they believed that she was a kind and compassionate individual. She always did her best to see the light in every situation - even helping Eleven get closure on the Great Time War. However, as time went on, Clara was seen to become quite a mean and harsh person.

For instance, "In The Forest Of The Night," Clara used Twelve's insecurities against him when she jibed how she refused to be "the last of her kind." When Danny Pink died, she betrayed Twelve's trust by trying to take the TARDIS from him unless he did her doing. Somewhere, along the way, Clara became a mean-spirited person, which fans didn't like.

Her Relationship With Danny Pink

Another aspect of Clara's journey that frustrated fans was how she allowed her relationship with Danny to affect her partnership with Twelve. It's no secret that Twelve and Danny didn't get along since the soldier hated the amount of time she spent with the Time Lord and didn't believe Twelve respected her.

As a result of their feud, this created an indecisiveness in Clara. One minute she wanted to travel with the Doctor and the next, she wanted to stop. Then she wanted to travel and then she didn't. It frustrated fans that she couldn't commit.

Lying To Danny

Eventually, Clara decided that she would carry on traveling with Twelve. However, she decided that she wouldn't tell Danny in fear that it would cause a backlash in their relationship. She then began lying to him about her whereabouts and told Twelve that he was okay with it.

Ultimately, this greed was something fans didn't like. They didn't enjoy that she was losing her integrity and becoming a lot more manipulative and deceitful. It also wasn't fair on Danny either.

Her Death Wish

Another aspect of Clara that got worse over time was the lack of concern she held for her own life. In the aftermath of Danny's death, Clara was seen to accrue a death wish. She was seen to find a thrill in her travels and had no regard for her own life.

First, she told Danny that she would kill herself to be with him ("Dark Water"). Then, she put herself in danger by placing herself in the middle of all the action ("Before The Flood/The Girl Who Died"). Not to mention how she took the timelock from Rigsy without thinking of the consequences ("Face The Raven"). Her behavior was so irrational...

A Terrible Chaperone

Considering that Clara's professions all involved her being a carer, she wasn't very good at it. She was particularly irresponsible and careless when it came to chaperoning children. First, she talked Merry into performing the long song, which resulted in her getting kidnapped ("The Rings of Akhaten").

She nearly allowed Artie and Angie to be converted into Cybermen ("Nightmare in Silver") and then placed Courtney's life in danger when they went to the 'moon' ("Kill the Moon"). She knew from personal experience the dangers of traveling and still, she continued to allow the children to come.

She Wasn't Very Flawed

One aspect about Clara fans believed got worse as time went on was how the writers made her a 'Mary-Sue'. For the 38 episodes she was on the show, some fans have suggested that Clara was "too good". She was always shown to be in the right, continuously saved the day, and acted as a moral compass for all characters.

Not to mention how she was created with the purpose of saving the Doctor's life. There was just no room for her to grow, which meant that she became a little predictable and boring.
