Doctor Who: Say Goodbye to Peter Capaldi’s TARDIS in This Time-Lapse Video

Last week, Doctor Who said goodbye to Peter Capaldi in a memorable Christmas Special, and now the series is saying goodbye to the Twelfth Doctor’s TARDIS with a strangely melancholy time-lapse video. Endings are hard, even when your character is Doctor Who and can regenerate in perpetuity to keep the franchise wheels spinning indefinitely, but ‘Twice Upon a Time’ managed to send Capaldi’s guitar-playing Doctor off with some finesse, while also introducing Jodie Whittaker’s highly anticipated take on the character, all while leaving the audience with one heck of a cliffhanger.

That brief glimpse of the Thirteenth Doctor ended when the TARDIS tossed its occupant and sent her into a precarious free fall. The temperamental time-and-space travel device has been known to cause as many problems as it solves, and it would seem the Doctor/TARDIS relationship will be getting off on the wrong foot as far as Thirteen is concerned. But perhaps the relationship can be mended with a simple makeover, and that’s precisely what Doctor Who is preparing for by showing the most recent TARDIS being disassembled and carted off its soundstage.

The Official Doctor Who Twitter account posted the video early on New Year’s Eve. It offered one last chance to celebrate Capaldi’s turn as the character before 2018 officially becomes the year of Jodie Whittaker. It’s not a terribly long video, and the music might be a touch too sentimental, but it’s still a fun look behind the scenes of the series.

The video seems fitting not only because it’s the end of the year and Peter Capaldi’s run, but also because of just how significant the change behind the scenes on the series really is. After taking over from Russell T. Davies, Steven Moffat has been piloting the Doctor’s adventures for nearly a decade now, and his decision to exit the show, with Chris Chibnall stepping in to replace him, promises fans are in for a dramatically different Who in more ways than one.

In essence, with all the changes coming to Doctor Who in 2018, a new look for the TARDIS could well be overlooked. But by posting this video online, the series not only calls attention to one of the most important aspects of the Doctor’s stories, but also demonstrates how season 11 really will begin with a totally clean slate.
