Each has its own merits and its own weaknesses, but with a show as consistently entertaining as Doctor Who, fans are sure to have their favorites.

Ranker has put together an extensive list of the New Who and Classic Who seasons that fans chose as their favorite, and the results prove just how subjective the question really is. Everybody looks for something different in Doctor Who, and its long-running format means that every new season is totally distinct from the last.

New Who Series 6

Showcasing Matt Smith's second series as The Doctor, series 6 is one that's received somewhat of a mixed reception over the years. While some fans are a little colder on its overarching storyline with the Silence, others praise the series for its rich character work and inventive storylines.

Series 6 was also pivotal in the development of River Song, whose many iconic quotes and memorable moments quickly made her one of the most beloved characters in the entire show. Her relationship with The Doctor was definitely one of the strongest aspects of series 6.

Classic Who Season 10

William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee in The Three Doctors Doctor Who

Marking Jon Pertwee's fifth season in the role (the longest any actor had held the position up until then), season 10 is often cited as one of the most engaging and entertaining season in all of Classic Who. It features plenty of unforgettable and iconic episodes such as ''Planet of the Daleks" and "The Green Death."

This season also marked the end of The Doctor's exile on earth, a plot point that had defined much of Pertwee's run as The Doctor up to this point. It was one of the first examples of The Doctor being restrained to one location, which forced the stories to be more inventive and unconventional.

New Who Series 1

The Ninth Doctor with his arms crossed in Doctor Who.

The first series of 2005's Doctor Who reboot was the starting place for a whole new generation of fans. Christopher Eccleston's Doctor was a perfect way to reinvent the character, and his relationship with Rose was one of the most compelling that the show has ever produced.

There are plenty of iconic moments between The Doctor and Rose in this first season, alongside lots of backstory surrounding the Time War that will go on to be a huge part of The Doctor's story for many, many series' to come.

Classic Who Season 7

Jon Pertwee as Third Doctor and Katy Manning as Jo Grant in Doctor Who

There are so many memorable moments from season 7 that it's almost impossible to choose a favorite for many fans. The highlights include The Doctor's arrival in a parallel universe, his conflict with astronaut George Carrington, and the Silurian's attempts to drive humanity into darkness.

The season marked Pertwee's first appearance as The Doctor, following on from Patrick Troughton. It was the second time that audiences had been faced with the issue of 'regeneration,' and it didn't take long for Pertwee to be fully embraced in the role.

Classic Who Season 14

Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen as The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith in The Masque of Mandragora Doctor Who

Tom Baker's iteration of The Doctor is widely regarded as one of the best there's ever been, so it's not surprising to see season 14 appear on this Ranker list. It features such beloved episodes as "The Robots of Death" and "The Masque of Mandragora."

The relationship between The Doctor and Sarah-Jane Smith had been one of the defining aspects of the show throughout Tom Baker's run, so her departure in season 14 marked a very emotional goodbye for many fans. It wouldn't be until the 20th Anniversary Special that audiences would see her again - and after that, another 23 years.

New Who Series 5

The departure of David Tennant's Doctor was also a hugely emotional one, but the arrival of Matt Smith's incarnation rebranded the show with the childlike wonder and innocence that it had been missing. His adventures in series 5 feature some of the most creative storylines in all of Doctor Who, and Smith's performance is totally fresh and unique.

Series 5 also introduced audiences to Amy Pond and Rory Williams, who would go on to become two of the most important people in The Doctor's life. His bond with Amy and Rory during their time in the TARDIS was so touching to watch, and his misery after they left was equally heartwrenching.

Classic Who Season 12

The first season in any Doctor's tenure is always a fresh and exciting experience, mostly because we get to learn about their new personality, traits, and quirks. Tom Baker's first season in the role, season 12, is great for all of those reasons and more.

The season features some of the most famous Classic Who episodes of them all, including "Genesis of the Daleks" and "Revenge of the Cybermen." If fans are looking for examples of older Doctor Who episodes that have perfectly stood the test of time, they don't have to look much further than these.

New Who Series 3

The Tenth Doctor was never quite the same after losing his partner Rose at the end of series 2, and series 3 expertly explores the subtle changes that this experience has on him. It's one of the most character-driven seasons of the entire show and features plenty of iconic and unforgettable episodes.

This series also features two different incarnations of The Master, played by Derek Jacobi and John Simm. The series finale featuring Simm's Master, "The Last of the Time Lords," is one of the show's boldest and most ambitious stories in the entirety of its 21st Century revival.

Classic Who Season 13

Doctor Who Pyramids of Mars

Yet another season featuring Tom Baker's incarnation of The Doctor, season 13 is widely regarded as the strongest and most entertaining seasons in all of Classic Who. Not only does it feature plenty of touching character work between The Doctor and Sarah-Jane, but it also introduces some incredibly creative and inventive aliens.

The highlights of season 13 include "Terror of the Zygons" and "Pyramids of Mars," which are both often cited as some of the best episodes in the show's history. The fact that The Fourth Doctor has so many beloved episodes under his belt is a huge testament to both Baker's performance and the many writers involved.

New Who Series 4

The Doctor and Donna Noble in Doctor Who

Someone would be hard-pressed to find a Doctor Who companion as funny, compelling, and all-around likable as Donna Noble - and series 4 takes full advantage of this. Her adventures with The Doctor are among some of the most entertaining and amusing in the entire show, and their on-screen chemistry is unbeatable.

Although Donna Noble's story ends in a tragically sad way, her time in the TARDIS will still always be one of the most fun to watch. She brings out a surprising level of humanity in The Doctor, and after all the tragedy that he's endured in the previous few years, it's nice to see him having so much fun with a new friend.
